I'm glad to see that you gave it a try, and you seem to be having a good time at it!

I won't offer you anything in the way of character development advice, save for this: Let the types of stories you're involved in inform your choices. Not only will it help the character come more fully alive, but your decisions will all acquire an internal consistency that will make your character's story that much more compelling, and focus on your character's story. His motivations, trials, tribulations, deepest desires, failings....for me, the magic has always been in creating memorable characters and then putting them in memorable stories. Everything else is...meh.

Of course, this from the guy who doesn't usually even let his players see their own stats, so take it with a grain of salt...

(fond memories of a woodsman character of mine who failed to protect the life of someone he was sworn to guard....he turned to the drink after that, and that one weakness became the basis for a whole series of adventures, temptations, failures, and finally, redemption...good stuff... )
The list of published books grows. If you're curious to see what sort of stories I weave out, head to Amazon.com and do an author search for "Christopher Hartpence." Help support Candle'Bre, a game created by gamers FOR gamers. All proceeds from my published works go directly to the project.

I plan on playing him that way, I got a detailed back story with special emphasis on his family history ... I am so hoping my DM eventually prepares something linked to that.

Let me know how it goes, and keep talking to the DM (let him know what you want/are hoping for). Any DM worth his salt can't ignore that.

                Not really.

That would be such a cliché.

They've never struck me as a terribly well run company.

If I had more free time, and if the other people I game with were up for it, I'd want to try out some of the less well known systems. We're also running a Deadlands game right now. Lots o' fun there.
You're in NoVA, right? Got any room in your games? A friend of mine is into role playing but has had some struggles getting a game going. He just moved to Virginia.

No, Weapon Finesse is a feat that enables you to use DEX bonus instead of STR bonus when attacking (with light weapons, rapier and some others). I don't know what your stats are, but I'm assuming STR > DEX, and possibly no DEX bonus.

If that be the case, then it would be of no gameplay value to take this feat, but immense roleplaying value:

See the dimwitted, rapier-wielding paladin clunk into battle in his heavy armor - en garde!
