We, our society, demanded changes in 80s, early 90s.

We changed our country (surelly in a stpuid, destructive way, by collapsing it), not you or anyone else. It was our own choice to turn to democracy and free market, not yours or anyone else.
We weren't defeated, we just changed for our own good, by our own will. That's why we won.
At the same time we lost, because our country collapsed. It wasn't really nescessary. USSR needed reforms, but such reforms could be done without collapse of the country (look at China).
Isn't that kind of like saying "you can't fire me, I quit?" By that logic the Cold War could not have been won except by us forcibly taking over the entire USSR and changing its economic and political structure ourselves. I don't think we ever tried to do that to you. JFK's attempt to that end in wee lil' Cuba was disastrous enough. So (IIRC; bear in mind I was about seven at the time) we just kept putting external economic pressure on you to make you crack, in the form of a brutal round of defense-spending chicken that landed us with the biggest and most unnecessary enlargement of the national debt until W's current Iraq fiasco began. I don't think it was terribly smart, but dammit, we won.

You actually collapsed under orders from Gorbachev, but if you want to be that picky, Hitler technically "defeated" himself with Eva Braun in that bunker. We were putting pressure on him, our troops and yours were closing in, but it was his decision to die.

    • Unique Building is the phallic CN Tower, which causes increased birth rates in the city it is built.

Unique Unit is Celine Dion, which demoralizes an enemy city such that half of its troops and half of its population flee the city.

      • there is actually a reason why both canada and the russian federation will be important in the future

        one word: oil

canada has it, russia has a lot more

and that's why russia is rearming like crazy

and everyone will want a piece of it once the manure hits the fan,

by the way, Serb, priviot (apologies if that's now how it's spelt)

        I've seen Russian Ark, v.good arthouse/historical film

Also have you any opinions on the book Russka by Edward Rutherford?

          You're extremely wrong.

These are the latest numbers. Note that Canada's will go up slightly as technology improves re: the oil sands.

          Canada: 179 billion barrels
          Russia: 60 billion barrels

It's not even close, Canada has at least 3 times as much oil as Russia. 95% of Canada's oil reserves are in Alberta. A province of ~3.5mil people has WAY more oil than all of Russia...

                • Finland is down in the semi-finals.

Just 15 minutes before the game I again had a telephone talk with the same friend and I predicted 4:0 for Russia.
                  Guess what was the score?
                  It's 4:0 for Russia!!!

p.s. Sorry, Pekka, you played toooooooooo dirty vs. Semin, Ovechkin, Zinoviev and Sushinsky. That was too freaking DIRTY, but that did't help you much. We outplayed you in every aspect of the game. I feel fully avenged for the Moscow 2007 semis and Turin 2006 semis.

COME ON CANADA, WE NEED YOU IN FINALS.

                  ROSSIYA - VPERED!!!

For once, I speak truth in Canada vs Russia.

You can look it up for yourself.

                        • I will ('cause I know that you are absolutely wrong), but not now. I have a birthday party in my house today.

Btw, congrats for beating up Sweden (Nash was superb, he is my favorite in your team). See you in finals (I knew we both will be there). And sure I wait you here in this thread after the final game.

According to Web definitions the term refers to the total amount of petroleum (oil) discovered in any given oil field or nation. Thus it can be said that Kuwait has xxxx millions of barrels (mb) of oil in the ground. However, the exact amount can never be known, simply because of the difficulty in sensing or "seeing" beneath the surface of the Earth. The term Proven Reserve or PR refers to an amount of oil that is generally accepted by geologists to be the actual amount of petroleum in the ground.

That should be a unique national wonder for Canada.

Combines with Rock n Roll wonder which gives Canada +2 happy faces/ city, but -4/city to any civ that trades for it. Also -1 dip vs. all civs when built.

                              • 1) Your oil is non-conventional.
                                2) As for Russia: "Estimates of proven reserves vary wildly. Most estimates include only Western Siberian reserves, exploited since the 1970s and supplying two-thirds of Russian oil, and not potentially huge reserves elsewhere.
                                3) Estimates of Russian oil reserves vary in your own source from 60 to 200. So your statement "It's not even close, Canada has at least 3 times as much oil as Russia" is wrong.
