I think that opinion in the United States is decidedly different from the rest of the world because we have a free press -- by free, I mean a virgorously presented right wing point of view on the air and available to all.- Ned

      • After a careful review and in depth study of every single post in this thread I must say, AAHZ is right as usual.

        • I don't agree with any of the above.

I believe this site needs to refocus its efforts, away from the Civilization series(but still have it as a mainstay) to perhaps, social networking, socio-political commentary and news. The allure of Apolyton is not its Civilization series coverage, but its Off-Topic forum and the many interesting people from various geographical regions that post here. Most people here have met each other via Polymeets and/or have known each other for years and quite frankly, I've seen people here give more accurate geopolitical analysis that I've seen from most pundits. The site owners should leverage these advantages.

Secondly, the sub-fora must be rolled back into the Off-Topic and the Off-Topic forum be given a prominent role within the forum structure, perhaps at the top. The sub-forums leverage little traffic, not because the topics are uninteresting, but more so because people forget that they exist. The sports forum is lively, I would agree, but are not given a wide audience to contribute to, and even though, there is no emphasis on sports coverage, I feel many more people would contribute to the topic within the Off-Topic forum. Obviously, the issues with the History and Tech sub-forums are self-explanatory and don't need to be elaborated on.

Lastly, do not change the ****ing forum layout, this site is most readable that I have ever visited. The less clutter, the better.

          • Oh yeah, and make Serb and that Lithuanian guy, Saras post more. This should be a rule.

Sometimes, I feel nostalgic for the Motherland, so throw me a bone.

I would rather have less traffic than some other sites as long as we keep the maturity. I want more traffic than we have now but I'm absolutely fine with having less than CFC or other such sites, again, as long as that maturity is here - I don't want the forum to look anything like 4chan. Or Forumwarz for that matter.

Also we dont really advertise that we are looking only for mature posters (and 55 year old FBI agents). One has to figure all of that our by reading the boards and such. So if thats what yall really want maybe you should make changes accordingly.

Sort of already the case. We have far less immature posters joining than other sites, and the ones that do join typically don't stay for too long. Which is not surprising.

I have no idea how to do this, of course, but i think a simple upgrade to VB3 will not cut the mustard, as mature enough posters wont care about that anyway.
Everyone likes to have less clutter, which is one of the things we want to do with vB3. And no one likes obsolete software - it isn't fair, really, that our forum lacks some functionality that every other forum has.

I guess nobody can really say much about site restructuring anyway until we see the final VB3 product when Gramphos is done with it.
Traffic was considerably higher in Civ3 days but the demographics were similar. We had older-than-average and certainly more mature than average posters.

The front page has changed actually, its current state was introduced later. And yes, I sadly remember what it looked like before. And yes, we all know that the front page still could use a lot of work right now - but let's at least get the forum upgrade complete first.
