I have been offered a contract to hire position with a very, very small start-up firm. I start Monday at a pay comparable to what I was making before, the commute is A LOT less and will become even better when they move next month to a building right around the corner from my house (5 mile drive). They told me they'd give me a 90 day trial with input on my performance at 30 and 60 days, and as long as I know what I am doing they'll be fine.
