      A couple of different things

      1. I am sorry to hear about your misfortune and wish you the best in turning it around.

      2. This example just re-iterates to me the value of universal health care-- THat health care is even an issue on top of all the realities of job loss -- I find almost offensive-- I like that I can go to the doctor when I want.

      3. It sounds as if ther job search has been going ok-- hopefully you had a good severance package-- The only time I was severed ( firm closed down) I managed to negotiate 6 months pay as a severance-- keep tracking those leads and be patient-- It seems opposite but once you have a lead lined up I think you need to appear dispassionate about the search
You don't get to 300 losses without being a pretty exceptional goaltender.-- Ben Kenobi speaking of Roberto Luongo

If you are next door in Cincinnati, you may want to consider NOT getting COBRA. There are numerous programs for prenatal care for pregnant mothers, and if you qualify for Medicaid you will be mostly covered. However, if you get hired again right before she delivers, you can end up falling between some nasty billing cracks. I believe my wife's part of the bill five years ago was $6,000, and my daughters was less than half of that. That was with complications and a three day stay, however, that was also at the Blue Cross negotiated rate. Before you go either way check with the local hospitals and see what you can pre-negotiate, even if it is something like the Blue Cross rate. Good luck - been there with my contracting out.

So I e-mailed the thank you letter on Tuesday, and they both replied saying that they would get back to me shortly and that they were pleased with my interview. However, as of this morning I still haven't heard anything. I e-mailed my recruiter Wednesday night (so basically yesterday) and never heard anything. I called the office today and my recruiter is on vacation and will be out all next week. However, they did tell me that the company had not gotten back to them. This makes sense since the hiring manager had told me he would be out of town Thurs. and Fri. Still, it's really annoying. I hate waiting. At least it's still not a no, but you'd think that would be easy to deliver.

I've got some books to occupy my time. One is on Emotional Intelligence, and it is helping me deal with this anxiety.

The unemployment office is questioning how I am paying for school part-time, that's concerning.

Actually, I'd be kind of interested in watching him destroy his life. I want to see ever more desperate posts from him, some obliquely asking if an Apolytoner wants anyone else "knocked off" for a few bucks, with a final, frantic post rambling about where to store the body, and then nothing.

That would be pretty cool, and much more interesting than the most likely outcome, which is, "Oh yeah, I got a job as a chemical engineer manager support administrative service officer. Good money. Plus benefits. Yay now my wife won't leave me."

                        • How long should I wait to call the company directly? Should I call or e-mail?

Had a phone interview with a company in Iowa. Seemed to go well... However, I don't want to relocate (I lied) and I don't want to live in the same state as MrFun (not a lie).

Biggest problem; no accredited uni with a part time MBA program near by.

Iowa's a small state. You can always drive to Minnesota or Illinois for your MBA. After a while all the corn fields look the same anyway...

I'd wait a few days, then call the recruiter to thank him for his time and for interviewing you...

                            • It's now Tuesday of the following week, Japh. He's back, he's had a day to catch up. Thus, probably a good time to follow up.

I strongly recommend a phone call rather than an email. Email is too easy to ignore, and you're much more likely to get good information if you can speak directly to the hiring manger.

                              • I have been offered a contract to hire position with a very, very small start-up firm. I start Monday at a pay comparable to what I was making before, the commute is A LOT less and will become even better when they move next month to a building right around the corner from my house (5 mile drive). They told me they'd give me a 90 day trial with input on my performance at 30 and 60 days, and as long as I know what I am doing they'll be fine.

The company is a contract consultant to the biofuel and alcohol purification industry (mostly biofuels right now since they are popular). It's not a whole lot different from what I have been doing, as far as industry, but the work will be different.

The two projects, to which I will be traveling to now and then, are in Montreal and somewhere in Florida. Future projects that they are lining up are in Thailand and Australia (so I guess I'll have to learn German).

Anyway, I'm excited to have something to do with my time. Though spending it with my family has been nice, but...

                                ---

Iowa wanted me to go in for a site interview. I turned them down due to the strength of the interview yesterday, and to the fact that I found out I have enough money to cover tuition until I am done with school.

I was about to call the company that I am still waiting to here on when this company asked me to come in for the interview, in 1.5 hours. So, I never made the call. I might tomorrow.
