The Zoé's ark debacle was a serious case of white man's burden.

In Spain, international fighters fought out of an ideology (be they fascist, Democrats or Communists) that they shared with local Spaniards claiming government. The same can be said of Islamists who go fight in Iraq, Afghanistan or Somalia.

But Darfur isn't seen as an ideologic fight. You have several ethnical group fighting, with the central government backing some against some others. There's no clear communist side, no democratic side, and even the islamist aspect of it is fairly low (at least in comparison with the above mentioned examples). The way Darfur is seen on TV, the divide is between victims and guilties.

If I were to volunteer to fight somwhere, it wouldn't be Darfur. Eritrea perhaps. Help the Kurds attain statehood?

The problem with most conflicts today is that I have a hard time identifying with one side against the other. I'd have easier choice if Spanish civil war was fought today than I have deciding whether to support the Tamil tigers or not.

I could perhaps identify with the Israelis against the Arabs, but they don't need help.

What do you see as the end state for Darfur anyway? It was people with incredible ****ty lives being bribed and instigated against people with slightly less ****ty lives.

I'd volunteer to fight the Canadian menace.

                Why is this the case?
Probably because the situation in Darfur isn't as bad as the media is making out to be. Most of the people are dying in Chad, in refugee camps, because the Chadian government is preventing relief agencies from giving enough aid.

I am SO helping out the people in Darfur. I've joined three facebook groups, signed dozens of online petitions, and made I don't know how many blog comments. How can you imply I don't care?

Another thing: those yelling loudest about "human rights" are usually spoiled leftist college punks who only dare to trash benign democratic governments. When faced with tough authoritarian regimes such as China and Russia, they become errily silent. When confronted with real thugs like Iran, Al-Qaeda, Saddam's Iraq, and Taliban's Afghanistan, they cringe with fear.

The real fighters in this nation are the ones whom they deride as "rednecks".
