They have a right to freely form a union and also to accept or reject any offer presented to them. How would you justify busting the union, other than being a whiny pissbag because you can't take the train?

It's not that I can't take the train, it's that the city needs them, they know it, and they exploit that to their advantage to maximize their pay and benefits. I not only can't take the train, but I can't drive into work because there's no parking. I can't walk to work because it's too far. I can't take a cab because everyone's taking a cab.

They have better benefits than I do, they make WAY more than they should, they basically can never get fired, they strike with HALF AN HOUR OF NOTICE without even attempting to negotiate.

It's a sign of a pathological organization that is merely out there to squeeze every possible penny out of the taxpayer to their benefit. Enough is enough.

This is different from any other government funded entity... how?

Most government entities revolve mostly around being lazy.

The TTC employees are rude, lazy, and arrogant. A few months ago I tried to buy a monthly metropass at Union station. Of the two collector booths "open", one guy was on break. His feet on his desk and reading a Tom Clancy novel. A lineup wound far around the booth as he sat there reading. The other booth had no metropassed for sale.

I waited in that line 15 ****ing minutes as this guy sat there reading his book, looking at his watch, then acted all pissed off when he returned to work and had a massive lineup.

Then there's the streetcar drivers that can't stick to a damn schedule. They'll stop in the middle of the line to pull up next to another idling streetcar and chat while everyone in both cars gets more and more pissed.

I think it's more of a sign of a bunch of people that feel they aren't getting a fair deal. Since the leadership recommended the deal I think it's safe to assume that it was a bunch of individual decisions that led to the deal being rejected. how can you argue with this?

You sound very inconvenienced, along with a lot of other Torontonians. For such a vital and valuable service, doesn't it make sense to provide good compensation? What is it exactly that you do as a consultant that's so important that you should make a decent living?

I do not buy into the logic that people who provide an "important" service should be paid more than is sensible given what they do. It's an important service whose requirements to do the job are basically nothing. That indicates the salary should not be competitive with people who spend $40-50,000 and 4 years to get a degree and end up making the same as some high school dropout pressing "go" and "stop" on a subway car.

They don't think they're getting a fair deal? Their benefits are better than the vast majority of people get. They're the highest paid transit workers in the country. They even have clauses in the agreement to ENSURE they remain the highest paid during the duration of the contract.

Yes, the problem is they feel they aren't getting a fair deal. The problem is THEY ARE GETTING AN AWESOME DEAL.

The problem is a sense of entitlement by the workers that is not deserved, and they need a swift kick in the ass to let them know it.

Maybe you should smarten up and join their union.

I actually went to school and have a skill.

It annoys me that a group of slackers can hold the city hostage and demand money they don't deserve because they can.

In other news, all 3 parties...including the socialist party...are ordering them back to work, the ****ers.

                        I would love to.

Part of the system is already automated (the Scarborough LRT). The trains are capable of unmanned operation.

But they have a "driver" anyway who sits there.

                        Care to guess why?

The drivers must coordinate when to leave when their is congestion to avoid possible delays and collisions with trains that are running late. To this end, they do more than simply sit there. The fact that many of them aren't hot or are sedentary doesn't mean they can be discriminated against.

False, this is actually done at Transit Control. The drivers just do what they're told. Transit Control -- which is non-unionized -- monitors all of this. Drivers just stop and told to stop, and go when told to go.
