I've ranted about this before, but it's worth repeating. OS X and Windows users are different folk. The vast, vast majority of Windows users don't care what OS they use, so long as the applications they want to run, run. Windows XP is perfectly fine for 90%+ of PC users and it will remain this way until there's enough Vista-only applications to force an upgrade.
OS X is a different beast. Apple and its tiny ecosystem of developers are very quick to move to the "latest and greatest" versions of OS X, primarily because they're used to it. OS X 10 and 10.1 were basically unusable, 10.2 was acceptable but still not very good, 10.3 was better, 10.4 better yet, and 10.5 a lateral movement with annoying changes. But Mac users are basically forced to upgrade within a year or two of the latest OS to use the applications they want. A large number of OS X apps are now 10.5 only already. It's also more of an "enthusiast" community than Windows which is a set of the population more likely to upgrade to the latest version. The fact that Apple doesn't support past versions of OS X very long or very well also plays a prominent role in user upgrade cycles.
PC users will wait til they get a new PC to upgrade, for the most part. Vista's sold in excess of 100 million copies so far -- 5x more than the latest MacOS X and it costs more. I'm unsure why you keep proclaiming Vista to be a disaster given that it's spanking OS X in sales.
There's an extremely vocal minority of Mac users, Linux users, and some people upset with Vista in the geek community. As a self-professed Slashdot reader, I can see why Agathon has the perception that no one uses and no one likes Vista, but he's very much wrong.
Long story short, Vista's going to have a slow adoption rate relative to the massive Windows installbase, but that's not surprising nor reason to troll/panic. It's the nature of the beast. As PCs grow more and more utilitarian and less and less of an "enthusiast" market, this trend will only continue."The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."

Microsoft shares fall on 4Q outlook, weak Windows sales

Microsoft falls as weak Windows sales hurt 3rd-qtr profit, 4th-qtr outlook fails to impress
NEW YORK (AP) -- Microsoft Corp. delivered an upbeat message for fiscal 2009, but its shares fell Friday after the software bellwether offered a lackluster outlook for its fiscal fourth quarter.
Micorosft on Thursday predicted fourth-quarter income of 45 cents to 48 cents per share, compared with the average estimate of 48 cents per share among analysts polled by Thomson Financial.
Furthermore, Microsoft reported quarterly sales of Windows software were below the predictions of Microsoft and Wall Street, although the company's results for the quarter ended March 31 were modestly above analyst estimates.
For its fiscal third quarter, Microsoft's profit fell 11 percent to $4.39 billion, or 47 cents per share, from $4.93 billion, or 50 cents per share, in the same period last year. Sales of Windows software fell 24 percent to $4.02 billion.
During the quarter, Microsoft faced disappointing personal computer sales and increased levels of unlicensed software in China.
Lehman Brothers analyst Israel Hernandez said in an investor note that the company's client software section reported sales at the low end of the company's guidance because of inventory problems, weak Windows sales and increased piracy.
He noted that the company's entertainment division easily beat his estimates because of stronger-than-expected Xbox video game console shipments. The company sold 1.3 million units, while Hernandez expected sales of just 800,000 units.
Canaccord Adams analyst Peter Misek also noted that sales of client software were somewhat weak, but said the entertainment division performed well.
He also said Microsoft's global presence should somewhat insulate it from an economic slowdown in the U.S.
"With two-thirds of the company's business outside the U.S., including 15 percent from high-growth emerging markets, Microsoft appears well positioned to weather a U.S. slowdown," he wrote in a client note.

Asher is a chronic Microsoft cheerleader. But we know already that Bill Gates is throwing the towel, that Windows Vista sucks badly, and that the Office franchise will be under assault very soon.
Does Asher dare to put a large portion of his net worth in MSFT for the long term? Only the money will show one person's true conviction.

When you can contribute effectively, I will listen, but in the mean time, I'll take your opinion on par with Agathon or any high school cheerleader I meet.
Quick, painless debunking:
Bill Gates has planned his departure from MS for many years in a staggered, structured manner. This isn't him throwing in the towel, he's switching full time to philanthropy which is far more personally satisfying.
Windows Vista "sucking" or not is a manner of perception. The people who complain most about it are the people who never have used it in any reasonable manner, which says more about those people than Vista itself.
The Office franchise will be under assault? By who? Corel Office? AbiWord? OpenOffice? iWork? None of these can come close to competing with Office. That's just a ridiculous comment that shows how little you know about the market.
As for "investing in MSFT", I deal with Microsoft constantly on a professional level and specialize in Microsoft development technologies. And it's making me a lot of money, more every year, and its making my company very, very rich. The MacOS X software market isn't growing as fast as Windows' is for many reasons that I'd be happy to go into if I felt you were bright enough to comprehend them. The Linux software market doesn't exist. The Unix software market is consistent but isn't a real growth market.
As for stocks, I don't invest in the stock market directly.Last edited by Asher; April 26, 2008, 01:50."The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."

The person who rails on how much Vista sucks most on Apolyton is a die-hard Mac users who's never touched Vista in his life. That really tells us all we need to know."The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."

I agree with Asher. I thought Windows 95 worked fine. Heck, I thought 3.1.1. worked fine. I just see Windows as something that gives me icons to click programs to start programs. I guess with 95, I've come to use the start button as well.
Anyway, it's all rather boring. Microsoft are simply a purveyor of an OS standard that no-one really cares that much about. They don't really have anything new or interesting to contribute. Companies like Apple and Google are where it is at these days.Only feebs vote.

If no one cares about Microsoft, as you claim, then why does it have a 90% market share to Apple's 6%? Stop being retarded.Try http://wordforge.net/index.php for discussion and debate.
