I mean, that seems perfectly valid for browser market share, but...

All browsers report operating system + browsers.

The wording was to indicate that the metric was derived from online website visits. There's no other way to come close to detecting which computers are active.

In actuality, this metric is biased towards Macs as Mac users tend to be heavier internet users statistically. That's why the marketshare is upwards of 6-7% when most experts peg it at 4-5% in actual sales.

Assuming they choose an adequately diverse set of websites, it suggests that those visitors accurately reflect the actual population of computer users.

I'd be very curious if the numbers are weighted in any way and what those criteria are if so...

          • Why don't they measure market share by hardware sales???? Every other industry does.

BTW Asher, would your Mac register as a PC since you run Vista?

Because they're trying to measure the proportion of computers in use for each OS. Since users of different OSs upgrade on different cycles, sales aren't sufficient.

Also consider how you would measure the market share of Linux using sales...

              Yes.

              • Let me be clear: I have virtually no emotional investment in this. I'm just trying to understand it.

To paraphrase Twain, there's lies, damned lies and statistics.

[addendum: That tells me that this is essentially market share as measured by OS in use. So even if your Linux machine has a big Dell logo on it and Asher's Vista has a spooky glowing Apple, they somehow don't count as market share for their respective manufacturers? See Twain reference above.]

                • Going back to Asher's graphical post, everything is actually pretty clearly labeled. I was misled by my own assumption (that this was about market share of actual computers). My bad, I guess.

My question actually was why a Wintel Mac shouldn't be considered as a PC.

                    • A Wintel Mac is a PC.

Macs are really about MacOS, not the laptop. ASUS makes the laptop and it uses Intel and Nvidia chips, there's nothing overtly Apple about it except the logo and styling.

They are counting OS market share, not manufacturer market share.

edit: sorry, I hadn't read your later post

Sorry, was MacOS X. I could've made that clearer.

It's just amusing to me given Agathon's tirades about how Windows is a sinking ship, everyone hates it, etc. In real terms, MacOS X' marketshare is dropping...and where do you think the share is going to? It's not Linux.

Mac sales may be on the up and up, but clearly it's not MacOS X driving those sales which is what Agathon implies. Many people are buying the computers and putting Vista on it, like Kuci and myself.

                              • I think Apple hardly could complain about the increase over the last 12 months, even if it took a dip this month. (I'd be suspicious of the dip in just one period like that, without seeing several months in a row - who knows what external factors could be driving it)
