I once went to an apple store in Indy. I'd gotten in just as it opened and within minutes it was filled. I asked an employee if it is usually so crowded so quick. She said that usually a little worse by now.

They're building, supposedly, another one in Chicago in an up and coming retail area ... the one on the Mag Mile is always completely packed, and lots of people buying lots of stuff.

They have really dialed in well to the urbo rich, techno, metro crowd.

Asher: you need to get them to hire you for boo coup bucks!

Asher as an Apple consultant would be sweet for all concerned, in so many ways.

You'd suddenly see mice with 158 buttons and laptops made out of 15# mesh paper...

Is it really? Do most people even know what that means for them? Maybe they'll have heard they can also run Windows on a Mac now (if even that, and I doubt most people do that either).

Other than that I'd think it's more the marketing, with iPods and iPhones and iTunes getting them plenty of attention, and the choice between a fancy-looking "designer computers" versus a boring Dell.

I know several people who bought Macbooks because of the ability to run natively both OSes.

I'd be surprised if a significant portion (>10%) of their marketshare came from people running primarily WindowsOS (XP/Vista). They (MBPs)are after all the superior laptop for running Vista (or were not too long ago), and generally are very high quality machines.

But the advertising of course is not a small part of it

I think your first statement is dead wrong. I have a lot of respect for Asher's POV and background in human factors design.

However, I do believe your second statement is right on the mark.

I can't stand Apple's SDK and development tools. They're a good 10 years behind Microsoft's in anything but simplistic applications.

The company I work for is (no surprise) a close Microsoft partner. We actually just landed a couple major, unannounced, high-profile Microsoft Surface projects that I may be transitioning to shortly. Nothing for home users, but for things like military, disaster management, and even some joe blow stuff. It's pretty slick, actually. And it'd be very sweet because Agathon keeps mocking Surface, but if he saw the $$$$ involved and development contracts flying around, he'd probably take it back.

                          Yes, the chipset is key.

Even I'm technically a Mac owner now, but I'm not a "Mac user" in that I just buy the hardware (MacBook Pro is a great laptop, for the most part) then use Vista.

                            Aw shucks -- thanks.

And yes, Jobs would have to watch his back. If he went onto one of his tirades into me (as apparently he does a lot to employees), he'd get an earful back.

It was quite obviously a massive exaggeration I was merely suggesting that the first thing Asher would do was rip out the key SteveJobsRules and start afresh

Well, even Mac users are near-unanimous in their desire for a right-click mouse as standard.
