NATO members show how much they value the Alliance
Russia in the NATO is absurd for the time being (and it was absurd in the 90ies). There are already problems resulting from different interests in the alliance (just look at this thread) it wouldn't be any better - rather worse - if Russia was in since Yeltsin's times, or do you guys think it would suddenly forget all its own interests in all aspects just because of a NATO membership? More members don't neccessarily translate into a generally stronger alliance, that's illusion.
"will assist the Party or Parties so attacked by taking forthwith, individually and in concert with the other Parties, such action as it deems necessary, including the use of armed force"
I've allways wanted to play "Russ Meyer's Civilization"
I asked a very serious question. The answer apparently disturbs you so you dodge instead.
Let's try again NYE. The question isn't that tough.
Was Afghanistan "broken" before we arrived or not?
Before you answer consider that most NATO officials referred to Afghanistan as a "failed state". What say you oh wise one?
"I have never killed a man, but I have read many obituaries with great pleasure." - Clarence Darrow
"I didn't attend the funeral, but I sent a nice letter saying I approved of it." - Mark Twain
The problem with your question is that it is irrelevant. If it being a failed state is one of the reasons it constituted a threat in the first place, it hardly seems productive to leave it that way.
"The DPRK is still in a state of war with the U.S. It's called a black out." - Che explaining why orbital nightime pictures of NK show few lights. Seriously.
NYE claims we have a moral duty to "fix what we broke". He is not arguing the strategic/tactical implications.

It appears it aren't just euros who struggle to make a distinction between Iraq and Afghanistan.

No it isn't. We have agreed to an extension of our combat role for another couple of years but the country is quite divided on the mission.

For those who aspire to live in a high cost, high tax, big government place, our nation and the world offers plenty of options. Vermont, Canada and Venezuela all offer you the opportunity to live in the socialist, big government paradise you long for. –Senator Rubio

it should reduce to three full members + half dozen supporters
US, UK, Canada + Italy, Poland, Georgia and who feels like it for a 4 year membership fee
"if you want to be a NATO member for next four years, you need to send 1531 soldiers into Afghanistan" etc...

Well you would have "In NATO" and not in NATO block... the not in NATO without some special affiliation like there was in the past... they would go to to Ivory Coast, Kongo or Kosovo off their own free will

Wrong. Not our job to make failed states unfailed all over the globe. Not efficient. Not even sure that we can do anything other than continuously occupy. and if all we cared about was stability, why not install a strong man?
