It's NOT surprising they get bitter. I don't understand the turmoil. He shouldn't have apologized, he was right.

I don't think it was the bitterness aspect of it, that was objected to. I think it was the "cling to guns and religion" thing. And that this bitterness leads to racism and xenophobia.
Just a weird statement, imho. hunting is a sport, religion is deeply rooted in people, especially small towners. both have existed in good times and bad.

I agree, asleep. It's just out-of-touch mumbo-jumbo. But I'm more interested in why Hillary thinks it's her role to set the table for the GOP's meal, and wonder how she thinks these kinds of issues are long-term winners for her.Last edited by DanS; April 13, 2008, 23:53.I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

"Guns and religion" were for instances. Again, he was right. What other option is there? Give up? Say "**** it"? We're in a war that's gone longer it should have gone. At some point, Iraq has to take ownership, whatever that means. Bush thnks he have to meake the difference. I unserstand his point. A great many of the military there think the same thing. The fact is, it doesn't matter. We can stay there 50 damn years, and it won't matter. It's how the area is throughout history.

What sleep posted is poorly worded perhaps... depends on what led up to that... or came after... who are "they"? I'd assume that it would be clarified in the context of what came before or after, but I don't know.
Just from that though, it sounds like Sloww is right, they were "for instances", not applying to each and every person obviously. There certainly are those who are bitter for one reason or another, and have turned to those things, just as there are certainly those who have not. This is the power of "or".
Without the entire context, it's hard to say though.

Since this came out (what, two days ago?) I always was amused by Obama's statement that frustrations lead to "anti-trade sentiment" since he's been yelling and screaming about NAFTA and other trade agreements the US has. Is Obama frustrated and clinging to that too (assuming it isn't just political posturing as the Canadians seem to be assured that it is)?“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

I'd assume that he was referring to protectionist, fortress America types. That doesn't describe the policies of either Clinton or Obama.
But it is true that he has overemphasized the significance of his criticism of NAFTA. Clinton did that too, but Obama's probably the worse offender. Basically, every national Democrat does that..."Beware of the man who works hard to learn something, learns it, and finds himself no wiser than before. But he was articulating an obviously true message that lots of people including both Clintons and McCain have made in some form.
I think Clinton may have done Obama a favor since the media is more likely to criticize a totally spurious attack made by Clinton than by McCain..."Beware of the man who works hard to learn something, learns it, and finds himself no wiser than before. NAFTA sucks. It's nothing positive for any of the countries involved. Other than Monica, that's what Bill is most known for. Some legacy.Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the moments that take your breath away.

in its entirety (its long) I haven't listened to it-I'd rather read than listen to an hour long speech.

It might actually have been problematic if the recording quality weren't so crappy...
Also, getting this out of the way now is what defuses it for October."Beware of the man who works hard to learn something, learns it, and finds himself no wiser than before. He is full of murderous resentment of people who are ignorant without having come by their ignorance the hard way. "

Crappy recording quality means that the ad buy is wasted money. And as I was saying, defusing the situation now makes it insignificant in October."Beware of the man who works hard to learn something, learns it, and finds himself no wiser than before. He is full of murderous resentment of people who are ignorant without having come by their ignorance the hard way. "
