  • I did say that other factors are involved here.

The point is that Obama is putting forth a very reasonable argument (that was badly stated initially).

What the hell is wrong with elitism?

For years and years and years, the GOP has used phrases like "the intellectual elites" to denigrate people.

Why the **** don't wouldn't we want an intellectual elite as President?

That's not the question. The question is whether someone portrayed as "elite" can win in November against John McCain?

The point is people want empathetic leadership. Gives the illusion that he cares about being a representative of the people and not a representative of a party/ideology.

As for being smart, course people want a smart POTUS, which is one of the many reasons this has stung Obama so much. He showed how incredibly stupid/naive he can be.

Aren't you asking the exact same question, though?

            When did "elite" become unelectable?

And if we really want a smart president, Ogie, please explain the last seven-plus years to me.

As Ogie pointed out, when people wanted a President to represent them and not just some ideology. Elite, naturally, indicates someone who really isn't in touch with the people and therefore can't really represent their interests while in the job.

              • Because given the choices we had none. Gore blew it by not using the Clinton political machine. Out and out stupid.

Kerry was and remains more politically moronic than Bush and that is saying something.

Um... since when, exactly, does it "naturally" indicate that?

To me, all it indicates is someone who is really, really, really good.

Emphasis added: I personally don't give two ****s about how well someone plays the election game. I have said it over and over again, the GOP is much better at getting elected than Democrats. In that one arena, in how to win an election, they are smarter.

A big part of that game was Team Bush calling Gore and Kerry "elitist". What the **** does that even mean? They were basically saying, "These guys are smarter than me, so don't vote for them." How the **** did the GOP get people to follow that line of logic?

Hello, Mr. Literal. I'm amazed that you can't do the proper translation: Arrogant.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

That's only when it before something (elite carpenter, etc). By itself, it indicates... well, like a Boston Brahmin sort.

It's because they are economically frustrated and bitter .
