They're trying to do the same thing we are, dominate the region. Since we handed them Iraq, it seems like they're going succeed, too.

The U.S. is occupying Iraq, the Persian Gulf, Afghanistan, and several of the central Asian republics. Do you think Iran might feel a little surrounded?
How is the US occupying the Arabian Gulf or any central Asian Republics?

but it certainly seems as if there is no doubt they are going for nukes.
        So you agree with Bush!

I think I should dig up a certain NIE thread....

The Gulf is full of our navy, plus we have bases in Kuwait, and several of the other Gulf nations. We have a few bases in the Central Asian Republics as well, or have we closed those down?

Information has changed. I fit my opinion to the data, not the other way around. Maybe new data will change my mind.

The Gulf is full of our navy
International waters, and while we have a good number of ships there, be majority of the coalistion fleet their is not US unless a carrier is there and we don't keep carriers in the gulf 365 any more.

plus we have bases in Kuwait, and several of the other Gulf nations.
We do so at the request or with the permission of those nations, which is in their soverign interest becasue of Iran.

We have a few bases in the Central Asian Republics as well, or have we closed those down?
A couple are still there, but they are maybe a few hundred members at most. They are really just airstrips for planes to touch down on and continue on, plus some comm/intel stuff.

So there is hope you will abandon communism yet

I think there is a difference between trying to be a dominant power and trying to export religious hegemony. Now, if we were trying to "Christianize" the region then we would have a different debate going on. Iran's stated goal since its inception as an islamic republic is to export its revolution. Two different things.

I want a new centrifuge. the one at work is getting a bit on in years.
Exult in your existence, because that very process has blundered unwittingly on its own negation. Only a small, local negation, to be sure: only one species, and only a minority of that species; but there lies hope. [...] Stand tall, Bipedal Ape. The shark may outswim you, the cheetah outrun you, the swift outfly you, the capuchin outclimb you, the elephant outpower you, the redwood outlast you. But you have the biggest gifts of all: the gift of understanding the ruthlessly cruel process that gave us all existence [and the] gift of revulsion against its implications.

Iran is such a big baby. If the Soviets were the only nuke power after WW2 the US wouldn't have tried to develop their own nukes even with Soviet bases in Canada, Mexico and Cuba. If the US would have been willing to accept that without hesitation than Iran should as well.

I don't think these would help you very much.

Empires don't roll that way. We told them to "request" our presence.

                            So?

Iran has the 2nd largest oil reserves in the world
And yet, IIRC, they import gasoline.

Having said that, of course they want nukes. But they don't want said nukes to use on us, or even Israel. They want them to deter us/Israel from whacking them upside the head for their support of Hizbullah and/or whatever faction is useful to them in Iraq.

grog want tank...Grog Want Tank... GROG WANT TANK!

The trick isn't to break some eggs to make an omelette, it's convincing the eggs to break themselves in order to aspire to omelettehood.

So...they want them so that they can use terrorist front groups to export their brand of totalitarianism and to be able to do it with impunity. I see...sure let them have them!!

Mainly because of lack of refineries.
