                          Daft Punk is very famous, at least in my generation, even to those who never listen to electro music. Air less so.

                          Neither group is considered the greatest (tastes vary dramatically depending on what kind of music someone listens to, but I don't see anyone considering Daft Punk as the best ever except maybe hardcore fans).

                          French music is dominated by songs and rap sung in French, as Nostromo said. It doesn't export well.
                          The biggest French musical exports are (IIRC) Ravel's bolero and Claude François' "Comme d'Habitude", because Sinatra's "My Way" is the English adaptation of the song.

                          There has been a renewal of the French music scene in the 90ies, with a rapid growth of electro, French rock and rap. During the 2000's, we also witnessed the revival of text-focused songs, which had faded after the death of the Brel/Brassens/Ferré generation.
