I brother in law and my sister moved 1.25 hours away from the city because that's what it took to find a large house near good schools which they could afford. A similar house in a similar school district might cost $1 million- $1.5 million in the city. Where as theirs is likely only worth $700k. The commute was hell for him until he started his own business and dig most of the code writing from home.

This isn't an isolated case. This has become the norm.

There is this thing called "Camp Pendleton" smack dab in the middle stopping that. It also has the only undeveloped beach in SoCal, and it's basically become a giant wildlife reserve for native species.
Today, you are the waves of the Pacific, pushing ever eastward. You are the sequoias rising from the Sierra Nevada, defiant and enduring.

There are a few other beaches (mostly state parks) but Pendleton is the largest by far.

It's a mix. For LA, its the combined statistical area (Los Angeles-Long Beach-Riverside, CA CSA).

Here's the database. Knock yourself out. Probably the county by state average is the most useful.

          Census Databse

For those of you who are all for high density, take a look at the commute times for New York City and its boroughs.

I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

I'm curious as to what you believe the required sums would be. Anybody who likes to keep their pocketbook full rather than empty will wince at the capital required.

Let's pad it and say $3 trillion making it equal to the to date cost of the war in Iraq.

No, how about you give me a number that makes sense.

It makes perfect sense. China built the Shanghai maglev for $1.2 billion. $3 trillion should be more then enough.

How long is the Shanghai maglev? How long is your proposed high-speed network? Did the Chinese pay for the right-of-way as we would need to do? Did the Chinese have to fight off all of the NIMBYs?

How about you stop BAMing about the GOP and work up some sensible order-of-magnitude figures.

Poland is building a TGV like bullet train system for the Euro 2012 event at the cost of $543 million.

BAM? You're the one who claims it would be just to expensive to build and when I show that it can be done for the same money as we've wasted in Iraq you claim BAM? At least if we spent it on train networks then we'd have something to show for it.

Ummm... No... They're doing a feasibility study about buying $543 million worth of rolling stock.

In 2007 France opened a new 190 mile long segment of the TGV which goes from Paris to the German at a cost of Euro 5.5 billion or around $6-$7 billion at the exchange rate during time of construction.

Face it it can be done.
