The 16yo Mortlach is also around $80US.
The Hart Brothers12yo Mortlach is about $75US.

There are several good sites in the US and UK that will ship whisky.
I'm pretty sure they cannot ship whisky to Canada. Hell, I can't even ship most electronics to Canada, let alone booze...

      • How many bottles are you allowed in your luggage?
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

        • Unlimited, but only the first 1.14L is tax/duty-free.

          So, 1.

But...customs is before I claim luggage. It's the honour system.

If you get to Los Angeles or San Francisco, I insist on having you try some of my whiskies. I'm almost exactly in the middle of SF and LA.

Glenmorangie (I got a bottle of the 10-year old original, the 18-year old was fantastic at tastings but it's a bit too pricey)

Macallan (bottle of the 12-year old)

I've also tried Glenlivet, Glenfiddich, Highland Park, and Talisker. All pretty good, but didn't taste as good to me as the Glenmorangie and Macallans.

The only single-malt I've tasted and absolutely detested as Laphroaig. All I could taste was iodine. Awful.

So, in summary, I think there is some merit to the claim that there's something to be had with single-malts. Though I still enjoy JW Black, even though most snobs frown on the blended.

I also still have a bottle of Crown Royal.
I'm glad we finally managed to educate you, though you should probably make sure you stay away from that Canadian muck or it might wear off.

Glenmorangie on the other hand is also my favourite single malt.

I haven't been over there since I lived in California, but I'll keep your offer in mind.

I think the Canadian "muck" is underrated. There's nothing wrong with rye...

Indeed not - you can make nice bread from it.

                      • Not really - I've managed to build up my natural defences against being constantly exposed to dangerous levels of wit.

                        • DrSpike,

If you can find it, try Sazerac Rye. Not Canadian, but a really good rye.

Anchor Distilling (think Anchor Steam beer) makes Old Potrero Rye and several decent whiskies.

Laz is quite right about the quarter casket - it's way smoother than the normal 10 yo. My sisters husband got one of them and it was a very different experience.

You say that the Laphroaig tastes like iodine - in my opininon it tastes more like old fashioned railroad ties filled with tar - well, my dad collected steam locomotives, so my reference is a bit strange.

Still, taste experinces are often very different.
With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

                            • Do you guys use the Glencairn Whisky Glass?

I got two at one of the Whisky shows. It's quite nice, but I also have some nice, heavy crystal Glenmorangie-labeled tumblers that feel better in the hand when drinking...but doesn't enhance the nose.

                              • So I'm going to Park Ave Liquor again next week, apparently the biggest selection of whisky in the USA with over 400 kinds:

I'd like to capitalize on this by getting some rare stuff I can't get at all in Canada. Any suggestions on quirky stuff?

I'm picking up a bottle of Milford for my brother (it's our surname...), a New Zealand rare whisky: http://www.spiritimportsinc.com/milford.htm

But I want a bottle or two for me...
