It's "common knowledge" that Iran is helping al-Qaeda...

Further north, coalition forces conducted three coordinated operations in Mosul targeting associates of al Qaeda operating in the area. The ground forces detained nine suspected terrorists on site, including three wanted individuals with suspected connections to an al Qaeda senior leader.
Two of the suspects are believed to be involved in an al Qaeda-affiliated insurgent group in the region and the facilitation of suicide vests. Another allegedly is involved with a foreign terrorist leader in the city.

Note that's AQI. Not any of the Shia militias.
Pretty sad, really.

That's why I rely on an original source whenever possible. It provides more reliable information.
You might want to remember that we happen to be ttalking about Iran, not Iraq.

The connections between Iran and AQI amount to unverified claims by Admin hacks.

Yes, he randomly threw that into a quote supposedly about Shia militias. Right....
UM IT WAS ABOUT AL QAEDA NOT THE SHIA MILITIA PLEASE READ AGAIN
n. That’s well known and it’s unfortunate. So I believe that we are succeeding in Iraq - the situation has dramatically improved, but I also want to emphasize time and again Al Qaeda is on the run, but they are not defeated. We are seeing a major battle take place in Mosul as we speak. T
McCain: I’m sorry; the Iranians are training the extremists, not Al Qaeda. Not Al Qaeda. I’m sorry.

It's a natural mistake. I mean, does anyone really understand the difference between Shiites and Sunnis? I don't think there is one, they just make it up.

I thought Iran arming Shiite militias and insurgents was common knowledge.
I didn't say I denied it was common knowledge, just that I didn't know it was common knowledge, for the reason that I stopped paying attention to most news from Iraq a while ago. I just keep track of certain statistics, to wit:
ARE WE STILL THERE--yes
DO THEY STILL HATE EACH OTHER--yes
IS "BOMB EXPLODES NEAR MOSQUE IN" PART OF HEADLINES FROM THE REGION AT LEAST ONCE PER WEEK--yes
CURRENT U.S. DEATH COUNT--Pushing 4K
Other than that I pay it no mind. Hard to know what's BS anyway. If something's got major headline saturation it might pierce my apathy shield, but not much. For example, I have some nebulous sense that the Turks are attacking Kurdistan, but no idea how long it's been going on or how they're doing. It's probably going to go fubar soon. If it hasn't already. Maybe they'll invest so much energy in worrying how to get out that they temporarily abandon trying to squash the life out of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. But I'm not holding my breath.

I don't think he was confused on that part. One subject just ran into another. AQI being trained by Iran appears to have been a mistake that was corrected with a save from Lieberman.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891
McCain is the definitive source on all things common knowledge.

Shiite fanatics (e.g. Iran) don't get along too well with Sunni fanatics (e.g. al Qaeda).
that's a nice generalization that does not sit well with reality.
Iran trains, funds and totally operates PIJ
Iran trains and aids Hamas
Iran trains, aids and operates (through Hizbullah) the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades.
Iran trains and supports sunni (and shi'ite) groups in Iraq.

But the Mosul comment (which clearly referred to AQI) was bracketed by comments about Iranian training (which clearly were referring to the Shia militias). He goes from the Shia militias to AQI to Shia militias without skipping a beat. No, it's pretty clear that McCain is awfully ignorant of Iraqi politics.
