1. It's certainly not common knowledge that Iran is training AQI. Some right wingers believe that's so, but most people would strongly dispute that assertion.
2. McCain corrected himself (or was corrected by Lieberman) to specify that the training was not referring to AQI. It's true that "extremist" is really ambiguous in this usage (and this taxonomy is another way in that McCain's Iraq knowledge is ****ed), but the only reasonable meaning would be "Shia militias."

2. Because the only kind of Iraqi force that "common knowledge" says Iran is training are the Shia militias - particularly the Badr Brigade. They probably are supporting other forces, such as the Peshmerga.

Eight years ago this month, John McCain took the New Hampshire primary and was favored to win in South Carolina. Had he succeeded, he would likely have thwarted the presidential aspirations of George W. Bush and become the Republican nominee. But Bush strategist Karl Rove came to the rescue with a vicious smear tactic.

Rove invented a uniquely injurious fiction for his operatives to circulate via a phony poll.
