America = 20th Century, Rest of World = 21st Century
Please, I come from Christchurch, you think I don't know how farmlands and cold weathers dirty the car? Excuses. Just too damn lazy to clean their own car, but its no big deal really.
I don't know what Christchuch is? But if it's no big deal, why did you use a picture of London to make your point? And please, wash your car in sub-zero temperatures. It's invigorating.
Anyway, it's more than an excuse. It's an unfair comparison.
I don't understand why a lot of you still pound on the mistake of my photo when I already admitted the mistake many times? You do all realise I am aware of it, but don't really care because the point of the post was to compare the cars of Chicago to Singapore? Do I really have to find an actual photo of Chicago's traffic, which can be almost identical to the one of London? You guy's are dodge the point and attack the mistake - kind of pointless tactic, kind of child-like actually.
It's because you hinged so much of your argument on it.

Come on, share your magical powers with me? How did you manage to judge me without knowing me? Amazing!
I'm pretty good at it.

btw, I know Singapore appears a Monarchy and a Police State, but I hardly ever see police around, and I knew a guy who was a major trouble-maker, stabbed people at hawker centres, etc, but they never prisoned him, they just tried to talk and reason with him, sat next to him on the couch in his house and make sure he is alright.
Of course, there's also the guy who was just gunned down by the police in one of the busiest metro stations in the city at 3 in the afternoon after stabbing his friend at a hawlker center. Hah! My anecdote > your anecdote.
I have never seen police abuse anyone, and I highly doubt they would or are even allowed to. Yet how many times have we heard US police abusing their power, corrupting the system?
I find the American version of freedom screwed up.
I find the fact that you've never heard about police abuse -- in a country where citizens have few rights to abuse and the government controls the media --unsurprising. I find your taking it as "proof" of anything hilarious.

What kind of idiot is born in a town called Christchurch? Holy ****, that's immensely stupid.

No matter how many times you post this, it doesn't change the fact that this is LONDON and NOT CHICAGO!!

I would love to see a brighter future for America, and that is why I posted this thread in the first place - to make a note to you American's that your country is not doing enough to improve its future. I was disappointed with what I saw in Chicago. I was hoping to step into 21st Century America, instead I stepped into 1980's America.
There are any number of problems with the US, and nobody in this thread has said otherwise. Specifically, with our cities, we're dealing with long-standing problems having to do with race and class. The origins are well before the 80s.
Whatever preconceived notions you had about the US are your issues, not ours. If you're disappointed, then it's no skin off our backs. Nobody guaranteed you that the US would be a richer version of Singapore (a police state). The differences between the two countries are greater than the similarities.
When you look at the ****ty subway systems that were built in the 10s and 20s, you may see decay, but we see infrastructure that is way better than the 70s or 80s. When you see lack of public order, we see public order better than it has been in decades.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Don't give him any ideas for his next thread!

Seriously, this reminds me of the bad kind of threads that constantly pops up at skyscrapercity.com. People judge places by how black the motorways are, how shiny the stations, how futuristics the trains and how tall the skylines, as if you have to obtain those for their own sake. A common mindset seems to be that something has to be replaced well before the end of a lifecycle because it mustn't look old.
NYC and London are chaotic and dirty, but they're never-the-less the twin-capitals of global Capitalism. Heck, maybe the reason why there's such a lack of orderliness is the same reason that made them prime cities in the first place.

It all comes down to the same point as always. Who is trying to get where? I don't see a mad dash for Singapore.

That guy at the MRT station probably had it coming to him; and probably the guy who shot him was meant to disable, not kill.
Upon what information do you feel makes these assumptions so probable?

I read the paper, the news, and I know how police in Singapore usually behave. I know the protocol.
So you base you beliefs on a state-controlled newspaper. Frankly, I don't think you know ****. I mean, it was London for heaven's sake!
