I don't know. I think the abolitionists did a fine job of breaking a law and making it respectable.

I'm not talking about Spitzer enforcing the fugitive slave act. I'm talking about the following quote from DanS:

Unless you're on the other side from respectable society, it just doesn't make sense to criticize a law man for upholding the law
If respectable citizens don't criticize the law because they're "respectable" then why did tens of thousands of respectable land owners with families and businesses decide to break the law vis vi the fugitive slave act? So it seems DanS is wrong and respectable citizens sometimes do find fighting against immoral laws to be justified.

          Follow my logic?

It depends on if Spitzer made gay bashing part of his campaign which I don't think he did. There is still the issue that Mr Law and Order Spitzer sent Johns to the big house for doing hookers while he himself was banging several on the side. That comment was more a dig at the gay bashers who were doing little boys up the pooper shooter.

I honestly don't care much. Spitzer's administration has not been going anywhere for the last few months. he got mired in "troopergate" (A 'scandal' that stupid deserved this equally moronic monicker), and his popularity is in the dumps. There might be a week or so of news about this unless he refuses to resign, and then Albany can get back to doing nothing fast. Maybe with Spitzer gone, Patterson can move things along, until the republicans lose the State Senate (here's hoping).

Paterson isn't going to do anything. LTGs in New York are a pretty pathetic bunch. Pataki's first LTG was essentially the crazy aunt in the attic for half of her term. Paterson's going to keep the seat warm until Cuomo Jr. runs in 2010. At least Spitzer saved him the embarassment of losing the primary.

Hopefully with the Ds in disarray the Republicans can hold onto the Senate. The glacial pace of NY politics and the old-school politicking that has to go on with the Republicans in the Senate are the only things that prevent New York's government from becoming a basketcase like California.

As is Barney Frank, who is gay all the way and hosts routine sex parties at his home, many with influential lobbyists. Conflict of interest be damned, Frank still has not been impeached.

                    D's in disarray? Please.

Spitzer has made a lot of enemies, and I doubt that Cuomo and Silver are going to care too much.

As for the Repugs, Bruno might be indicted at any point, who knows, and they are counting on a bunch of octegenerians to keep their hold on the Senate. More importantly, the elections are going to happen at the same time as the Presidential elections, so regardless of which Dem gets the nomination, there is going to be a surge of Democrats going to the polls.

Besides, without Spitzer to complain about, just what the hell are the Repugs in the Senate going to talk about? Elections are more than seven months away. This will be the ancient past by then.

I didn't say it would be long-term disarray It'll just be long enough to possibly hold back the Dems for the cycle. It will be interesting to see if McCain excites upstate Republicans. I'll concede that the GOP organization in NY is godawful and it'll be a generation before it'll be serious force in NY politics again. There aren't a lot of Bill Powers' sitting on the GOP bench ready to revitalize the party.

The GOP will continue to ***** about the normal stuff, like taxes and the damn downstaters screwing us country bumpkins over.

California's problems were created by the "reforms" put in place by Republicans in the 60's and 70's by people like and including Governor Ronald Reagan. Prop 13 gutted the state and local government's ability to tax and then similar reforms meant a 1/3 minority could bloke cuts in spending or even a basic budget. Get a few zealots into power and the whole thing stops functioning. That's what we have; no ability to raise taxes and no ability to cut the budget.

You miss his point entirely. S'ok though, what DanS was saying is that if you believe in a society of laws, it is hard to really criticize a Law Enforcement Official for upholding the law. That's his job. His job isn't to decide which laws are moral or immoral. That's for others to do. He simply is required to enforce the laws already in place. Otherwise, what sense is democracy when a single law man can decide he doesn't want to follow the law.

You bring up slavery, but one can easily turn it around and say what about the law men in the South who refused to help in desegregation, leading to the national guard being called out? They considered those mandates to be to be "immoral". Law men aren't supposed to be making those judgements.

                          - John 13:34-35 (NRSV)

The recent Senate special election, where Aubertine took a deep red bastion, doesn't portend well for that. From everything I've heard, Paterson at this point would be better for the Dem ticket than a sex scandal-less Spitzer (and if he's effective, he can turn this boat around - look at Rell in CT). The biggest difference seems to be that instead of only a one seat pickup for control, the Dems need two.
