dejeuner, diner, souper.
Once you learn that dejeuner is breakfast, it's natural to translate the others as dinner and supper, until you learn that, for most North Americans, the equivalent would be lunch and dinner, respectively.

"elevensies"
I use supper and dinner interchangably. I blame the francophone influence on my culture for this anomoly."I have never killed a man, but I have read many obituaries with great pleasure." - Clarence Darrow
"I didn't attend the funeral, but I sent a nice letter saying I approved of it." - Mark Twain

Columbus, Ohio got 20 inches+ of snow yesterday!I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

I haven't seen it yet. (Can anyone here comment on it's suitability for encouraging friskiness?) But it got all kinds of BAFTA and Golden Globe awards. And it's got Keira Knightly in it.

Dinner is the largest(/most formal) meal of the day. Currently for most people it is supper. However, previously (and still, for some people) it is lunch.
It can never be breakfast, even if that is the largest meal of the day.
