I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

    • Was that a self-parody?

What, morale isn't a significant factor?

          • It's an utterly preposterous idea. If you don't think that the war hasn't been a boon to Salafi militants, you're fooling yourself. We've reinforced the idea of a Crusade by invading a Muslim country on very tenuous grounds, devoted fewer resources to the areas in which they need to be dealt with - Afghanistan and the Pakistani NWFP, as well as given them graduate degrees in insurgency tactics.

Not only that, but of course there are better ways to discredit AQ. We do that by giving Indonesia tsunami relief. There's a UN program that I like to bring up habitually - the Global Campaign for Education. The idea is that with an American contribution of $3 billion over the next 4 years, we can make primary school education universal. Note that's less than 1% of our Iraq War spending rate. That's how we discredit AQ.

As I was saying, pure self-parody.
Even DanS openly admitted that there are other better ways to discredit AQ. All the wording of his post said was "look on the bright side, at least X," so now it's you after the straw man of the hour. Give it my best!

                2. The second paragraph was directed specifically at "may be."

                Speaking of straw men...

                    • I'm further disappointed with the dearth of Tang.

Then again there is an abundance of 'tang, so on balance it ain't so bad.

                      • I wonder about the value of those graduate degrees. Right now, it appears that we're learning faster than they are.
