  • Gary Gygax fails his Saving Throw

I don't know about the rest of you, but I spent an insane amount of my childhood/teen years playing Dungeons and Dragons, and even today I play the DnD inspired Castles and Crusades with my kids (yes, I even managed to find a woman that would marry me and procreate along the way). So I was quite sad to hear that the father of the game has passed away.

RIP Gary. Hope your rolls are better wherever you are.

Just heard about this. I still play D&D, actually. Man, this is weird/sad.

Thinking about all of the hijacked versions of his game is really mind boggling. From board games like Talisman to MMORPG's like World of Warcraft.

Talisman, wow. I used to own a first edition. Still have a second edition somewhere.

I own a copy of Talisman. It's a terrible game.

I wouldn't be suprised if I was the only person on this board who has never played a single game of D&D, any clone or spinoff in his entire life.

                    Rest In Peace, Gary.

Your name shall live forever in the hearts and minds of geeks everywhere. You helped start an industry. you helped shape countless of imaginary worlds that are very real with millions of people. You created an unkillable MEME.

                    You are a legend.

Those were the days. Ming actually introduced me to D&D in college. This was around '74-75. First publication I bought was Greyhawk. I actually went up to the shop in Lake Geneva to buy it. It was pretty cool to meet and chat with Gygax. I ended up hanging out all day; joined a session of a game they were playtesting.

                      Good times.

He was a pivotal figure in my early teen years. All of my friends played AD&D every Saturday and it is amazing how attached people can get to fictional characters. I remember seeing Castles and Crusades a few years back but never actually played it before though back in 1990 we did briefly try to play Chainmail from a copy one of my friends found at a swap meet. I thought Chainmail was to much of a war game. Oh, but Gygax's Gord the Rogue book series was good at least until the very end when Gord became some sort of super god.

Lastly, I shock hands with Gygax at a gaming convention in 1995 and in 1998 he responded to a brief e-mail I sent him on his web site asking about who published few Gord the Rogue books (it was complicated with two companies going bankrupt and a third barely even getting off the ground). Gary seemed like a really creative and good guy even if he wasn't one of the best business managers out there.

It depends what you define as a clone. I played this game my brother recommended once, called Darkstone, but quickly realized it was just a dumb neverending treadmill and quit. Oh, but I did play Gauntlet for PlayStation. Maybe that counts somehow?

EDIT: Forgot that I did play Master of Magic a number of times. That borrows a lot of terminology and attitude, doesn't it? My, this lame-ass game left a mighty legacy...
