  • If there is a bad discipline haircut can you get styles for different effects? I'm thinking maybe a haircut that makes you more creative or one that helps with math. You may be on to something here Kid.

Obviously you don't understand what I'm saying, probably on purpose. The haircut doesn't make you smart. The school environment (culture) does.

Sorry, if you claim something is happening, but can't explain how and why then your experience doesn't count at all in this particular question. If you can't back up your assertion with anything better then just repeating the same assertion again you shouldn't wonder if people don't accept your POV on the matter as the ultimate truth.

          • I don't spend a lot of time wondering about why people believe certain things anymore. I accept it, and know I can't change it. It really is absurd though.

As far as know why dress code is important, I don't. I do know that it probably has to do with child psychology which I admittedly don't know much about. I do however know that students are affected by the culture of a school, because I've seen it. If the school doesn't seem to care about education the students won't either. So if all the students have mohawks that sends a message that no one cares about education.

              You said this:

A school full of kids with mohawks is going to have a lot of problems with discipline.

I've asked you twice now to source something to support this. Twice you have refused. I must conclude you are unable to back it up.

              • If anything (by your own logic) there should be fewer problems as all the kids would have the same haircut and you will have achieved the conformity you feel is so desperately needed to teach a child.

You still aren't trying to understand what I'm saying. I didn't say you need conformity. You need to have a school culture that discourages discipline problems and promotes education. How hard is that to understand if you try?

Explain why this encourages disclipline problems. If conformity is not your point then the distraction factor isn't what you are arguing. How does a mohawk cause discipline problems and what haircuts generate good students?

I put forward the idea that a school full of kids with mohawks whould be a very bad school, because I thought that would strike your common sense. I see that that is not the case. You've taken that to mean that I think conformity is important, which was not my point. I don't necessarily agree with school uniforms although I think they work. They work because the help create a school culture that is condusive to learning.

Maybe only if you actually work at a school do you understand how important school culture is. Maybe the biggest problem we have to day in schools is that schools have very poor culture. Students care more about fashion than they do about their education. They care more about getting attention for their freaky hairstyly than they do about getting attention for their success at school. The schools can be to blame for part of that in many cases.

So what you really meant to say was "A school that would allow itself to become full of kids with mohawks has an underlying problem with discipline." or something like it.

I still think this ties in with the conformity issue but that's already been argued.

I agree schools today are failing but I don't blame the students for it. Kids will be kids and "being different" is something almost all will strive for, even if that means wearing the same baggy pants around their knees that all their friends do. What they look like is not so important so long as they are engaged and paying attention. This comes down to finding (and paying for) good teachers and administrators and not just hiring petty bureaucrats to push the kids through the cookie-cutter system.

You and I both agree that it's not an issue of comformity. We both agree that a school full of kids with mohawks would not do better just because all the students are conformed right?

The thing is that kids tend to conform all by themselves. It's called fashion. I seem to think that's about freedom and individuality, but I know different.

The thing is that a school can use that to an advantage. Kids want to conform. It's just a question of what they want to conform to.

Well I just flat out disagree with you. The problem is the culture, and that places most of the blame on the students and their parents. The schools are trying to do something about it but it's tough to go against the culture of society and try to establish a better culture. That's why some of the rules seem outrageous.

Okay, so you are back to that again. If it isn't conformity it is the haircut (and heaven forbid a school full of them). What exactly is it about a mohawk that disturbs you so? Is a symbol of devil worship or something?

People usually get them for attention, and usually negative attention. Just like girls where skirts that are too short or low cut blouses. It's not a symbol of the devil or anything, but usually the case is that you don't care much about your education.
