It makes sense though. If the society is one where people can be relatively poor but still not actually desperate, and still have enough out of life to enjoy it without turning to crime or drugs or violence, then it seems reasonable that the incentive to work hard and endure stress just for money would be less. Of course, the downside to this is that one's ability to support a family and children would be reduced, leading to the phenomenon we see here - local women looking for outsiders, with a focus more on the "provider" role than necessarily the "lover" role.

Some place like the US, the costs of being poor are quite high. It's not like you can just chill out at the coast or movie theater or whatever like everybody else. You lose insurance, you lose mobility with not being able to own a car, and your access to the money you should have (e.g. paychecks) is further limited by not having credit lines or bank accounts, etc. The incentives to getting rich may be higher, and that's not necessarily because USers are any more upstanding than Filipinos, but quite possibly because it's so intolerable being poor that fear motivates the individual.
