I'd have a lot of trouble arguing they don't need what they're asking for.

I'd do much better arguing that, for constitutional or other policy reasons, they shouldn't have what they're asking for.

I'd think it would be more effective to "microstamp" the barrel, i.e., engraving something like a bar code on the inner surface of the barrel which would in turn be etched on the surface of the bullet.

The point is that the NRA has really much greater concerns about the liberty our founding fathers gave this country than a mere obsession with the 2nd amendment. The NRA is deeply protective of our hard fought for right to privacy. You should be able to use your firearm discretely and in privacy.

You know, microstamping might not teach people to be peaceful, but it might teach them to be neat and courteous.

Actually why would you expect matching striations on the bullet and the cartridge? The striations on a bullet are caused by minute imperfections of the barrel, but the cartridge doesn't travel down the barrel.
