  • No More Mittmentum?

The Atlantic covers news, politics, culture, technology, health, and more, through its articles, podcasts, videos, and flagship magazine.

I'd be astonished if he doesn't throw his support to McCain. But one can always hope.

The GOP race now looks remarkably similar to Kerry-Edwards '04... You've got your war hero as the front-runner and overwhelming favorite to win the nomination, a Southern populist as the underdog not so secretly running for Veep, and a party base that doesn't particularly like either one.

Romney will stay in because he's aiming to position himself for a future election. That said it would be far better for the Republican Party if he'd check his ego at the door and make way for the winner.

I'm all for Republicans continuing to mutilate themselves though.

Romney is not staying in, that's the point of that article...
Mitt Romney will suspend his presidential campaign in his imminent speech to the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington, today.

So much for "I'm staying in until the end" Romney. I guess he's decided $50-$60 million of his own money hasn't bought him any traction so he's saving what he has left.

I think I'll wait until a real news organization announces this before I believe it though. I mean just one blogger who works for the Atlantic? When CNN, BBC, MSNBC, or CBS announce it then we're talking.

It's basically impossible for him to win at this point. He'd have to win something approaching 100% of the remaining votes to pull that off.

I agree. It's a question of much of his own funds he wants to wast in order to position himself for a future run.

He's not going to run again. He killed his political future in MA by dropping every single one of his positions, and running for President based on a 4 year stint as Guv ending 6+ years earlier ain't gonna work. It also doesn't help that he's a joke nationally.

Maybe Tagg can try to buy the GOP nod at some point...

CNN is announcing it too as their Breaking News.

"If I fight on in my campaign, all the way to the convention, I would forestall the launch of a national campaign and make it more likely that Sens. Clinton or [Barack] Obama would win. And in this time of war, I simply cannot let my campaign, be a part of aiding a surrender to terror," Mr. Romney planned to say in a speech to the Conservative Political Action Conference.
                          What a douche.

So, the #2 guy quits but the #3 guy (Huckabee) with even less chance of winning the nomination stays in?!
'There is a greater darkness than the one we fight. It is the darkness of the soul that has lost its way. The war we fight is not against powers and principalities, it is against chaos and despair. Greater than the death of flesh is the death of hope, the death of dreams. Against this peril we can never surrender. The future is all around us, waiting, in moments of transition, to be born in moments of revelation. No one knows the shape of that future or where it will take us. We know only that it is always born in pain.'"
