I think that opinion in the United States is decidedly different from the rest of the world because we have a free press -- by free, I mean a virgorously presented right wing point of view on the air and available to all.- Ned

Detra sounds like some sort of knock-off version of the Sentra.

Actually, you'd be surprised. Most of the people who join cults are surprisingly intelligent people. Stupid people usually stick with the main stream religions. They don't wonder if there's more to life.

Of course, I'm a former cult member so you should consider the source.

There are two types of cults: those that are basically harmless, like the one I was in, and those that are destructive. The Church of Scientology falls into the latter camp. They really destroy your life in a way that main stream religions do not.

Compared to capitalism it's down right benign. You kill more in a decade than we did our whole run.

Actually, it's true, at least if you go by the years between 1997 and 2007.

Then again, nobody was really a socialist at that time, save for China, and you can hardly call them socialist anymore.

                          Former?

I amend my earlier statement. Replace "stupid" with "foolish."

In any event, I'm no fan of Scientology. I just don't see much distinction between it and many other (harmful, IMO) cults. Going after them is, to an extent, like playing whack-a-mole. People are stupid foolish - new cults will arise.

The trick isn't to break some eggs to make an omelette, it's convincing the eggs to break themselves in order to aspire to omelettehood.

The Black Book of Communism claims my comrades killed or were otherwise responsible for the deaths of 100 million people from 1917 to 1991. I'm in no position to argue for or against that number. The wildest claims would put the USSR and the PRC together at 160 million, and that wouldn't include horror shows like Ethiopia of Cambodia (which was actually anarchist-politically, even though they called themselves Communists).

Right now, every year, about 10.1 million children under the age of five die each year because there is no profit in saving them (there has been a 60% reduction in that death rate recently, however --so it was much worse recently). In a single decade, that 101 million children who could be saved if there was profit in giving them food and medicine. That doesn't include all the other ways people die for profit or because there is no profit in saving them.
