  • Worldwide pickets against Church of Scientology on the 10th / Project Chanology

I find it rather surprising that we don't already have a thread on this considering that an Apolytoner has had a rather unpleasant run-in with the Church of Scientology before.

Anyway, in case you've never heard of the Church of Scientology, they're basically a rather paranoid and secretive cult with a bad habit of sucking all of its non-celebrity members dry of money and isolating them from society, their families, etc.. It's more or less your standard evil anti-human cult package, except with a side of filthy moneymaking and a rather nasty way of handling its detractors. And more. Definitely destroying it is a cause worth setting aside some time for, ay?

You see, the Church's efforts to suppress a video of Tom Cruise verbally leaping high up and down on a couch apparently were the final straw for a lot of decent people, and there's now an impressively large movement around that wants to finally tear down the Church of Scientology once and for all. It's hard to tell exactly how many people are involved, but perhaps the success of the two pickets in Orlando, Florida so far are *some* indication of what will happen on February 10th.

The plan? Nothing less than basically worldwide pickets - well, rather, pickets everywhere where there is Scientology - on the 10th. The purpose is to get the word out to as many as possible about the actions taken and the dangers posed by the Church of Scientology, in order to reduce their base of recruitable victims and move on to even more significant goals: Getting their tax-exempt status rescinded in the US, sowing discontent and resentment against the RTC among the Church staff, helping lower-level members break from their cult programming, infiltration of the organisation, etc.. This is a multi-pronged attack, but for now, the focus is on the Sunday pickets.

If you want those goals to be reached - if you want the Church of Scientology to be destroyed - the right thing to do right now is to prepare for the picket on Sunday. See where and when the picket will be organised in your area (alt: http://partyvan.info.nyud.net/index....ogy/Target_IRL). Read the guidelines, the other set of guidelines, both of which are quite essential and boil down to rather simple ideas.

Oh, and here's a few motivation pieces:

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=JCbKv9yiLiQ <- the YouTube video by Anonymous that more or less sparked the whole campaign
http://xenutv.wordpress.com/2008/01/30/macs-world/ <- Mark Bunker from XenuTV on Mac's World (a radio show)
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=oHg5SJYRHA0 <- a Rick Astley hit that you're probably going to get to hear in the demonstrations

Be wary, be wary of the tenth of February.

(and before anyone says that this is just a stupid V for Vendetta reference... February 10th is the birthday of Lisa McPherson.)

Sounds like too much work for something so insignifigant.

The church is dying anyway, this would just be a hit over the head to make sure it stays down. Worthwhile, I suppose, but not essential.

There's a lot of fuss now here in German media about Cruise, scientology and his Valkyrie movie. Dunno if I care.

Er, Scientology doesn't tell its novice members about Xenu and thetans and engrams. You don't get to hear about that crap until you've been in the cult for several years and been exposed to a great deal of processing, not to mention having invested enough time and money to make admitting you were wrong almost unbearably painful. Up until then it's just a boring pseudoscience akin to bastardized psychoanalysis. Nor do they give up all their money at once, there's a whole progression of stages you pay one after the other. I don't think many absolute geniuses have fallen for it, but they aren't all "morons."

I'd have to go to Toronto to take part and quite frankly I can't decide which is worse, Toronto or Scientology.

Definitely Toronto. When Quebec separates we should get them to take Toronto with them.

But what's the point of separating if they have to take Toronto?

Sure, it's not the greatest evil in the world. Wouldn't it be nice not to have it around anymore, though? It wouldn't have been the first time a cult has been eradicated...

Really, folks, I'm not asking you to commit your life here. It will take some trouble to actually make sure you'll be a positive rather than a negative influence (educating yourself and preparing information to disseminate, while making sure you won't get into trouble and ensuring others won't cause trouble or get into it themselves) - but hey, you're posting on Apolyton, surely you can set aside the time for this?
