Ron Paul brought this up in a debate a couple of weeks ago.
Paul's point is that, if we want a tamper-proof card that people will have to produce in order to get employment, wouldn't these cards have to be distributed: (a) to all aliens; (b) tp everyone who looks as if they might be an alien; and (c) to everyone else. And if so, haven't we created an de-facto national identity card? (Everyone else on the dias looked very nervous and changed the subject.)
Considering the illegal alien problem, the fake social security papers, and the massive amount of I.D. theft, it's it time we jettisoned our age-old abhorence to a national I.D. card and embraced the inevitable?
