I didn't include Nixon as a staff schtupper- your mistake.

L.B.J. had the help on his desk- in the Oval Office, no less. Power is such an aphrodisiac apparently.

As for Saint Ike of the Golf Course- Kay Summersby wrote a book recounting their intimate relationship.

Only if you exclude me from "the rest of the world." Not that it matters, since I wasn't in a position of power, but I was pretty sure from the get-go that Hussein posed no real threat. Why would a secular dictator whose chief motive is to stay in power spend money to make superweapons and then entrust them to a bunch of nutjob terrorists whose loyalty is not to him and who will take the things underground where he can't track them, all in the hope that they will further PO an already PO'ed superpower on the other side of the world? He was a nasty character, but he didn't stay on top for all those years by being a complete moron.

It didn't matter what we thought, though, because it was plain from the start that he had his heart set on invasion for whatever fool reason, and Congress certainly didn't have the balls to stop him. I didn't figure on his being so stubborn; I thought we'd go in, ruin the country, then leave the Iraqis holding the bag after a year of "peacekeeping" so we could bomb something else...you can tell I wasn't alive during Vietnam, can't you? It's a terrible thing when a man comes to believe his own lies.

"The actions taken in 2003 were based on the collective judgment of intelligence agencies around the world," Stanzel said.
If this were true, it wouldn't say much for either their judgment or collective intelligence quotients.

I'm reading Bob Woodward's 'State of Denial II' which is quite an eye-opener on the unjoined-up thinking in the Bush administration in the runup to the war with Iraq.

The headline doesn't match the contents of the article, I'm afraid. It doesn't support an argument in good faith -- it's rather insulting, to be honest.

I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Is this supposed to be some sort of justification for the government deliberately lying to promote a war?

The ends do not justify these means.

IIRC the CIA was prompted by the State Dept to find something to justify action against Iraq.
