I'd probably go with Bill Murray. He he's got alot of comedy under his belt but can pull off more serious roles too. I loved The Life Aquatic and he definately made that movie for me.
Maybe Josh Hartnet for a runner up with abit of youth. I never minded the guy till after I saw Lucky Number Sleven which I also loved. I came to appreciate him after that.

        Heath Ledger, RIP
        Daniel Craig
        Johnny Depp

        Joseph Gordon-Levitt shows promise.

As for the female set, I'd have to go with Judi Dench. Maggie Smith is also quite good.

Norton and Clooney, I can always see their inner personality, which is not good acting.

Dicaprio, hate to say it, is a brilliant actor
            of couse Depp
Denzel Washington never ceases to impress me either
            Peter O'Toole cracks me up
and Jim Carrey is also way up there, he can make you laugh, cry, be angry, anything

I second Djimon Honsou, I felt he was better than Dicaprio, but that may have been because he is a unique face, unique accent and his roles help him to show off.

And Lord Shiva, are you kidding when you say Jackie Chan? He is a terrible actor, he wishes to be a good one, but he just isn't, even in his old Chinese movie days he was no good. The problem with most Asian actors is that they are too reserved or emotionally restricted, so their best characters are those who are reserved.

Would that make him a good character actor, then? "Thoughtfull, silent type", "leads goofy pal", what have you.

I'd have to say, Hugh Laurie. Used to love Jeeves and Wooster (Stephen Fry is rather excellent, too), and his portrayal of Gregory House is splendid.

I also loove Winona Ryder, but I'm thinking that's more of a crush than apreciation of her skills.
I've allways wanted to play "Russ Meyer's Civilization"

Everyone talks about Johnny Depp and they never mention what I consider his best acting, Benny and Joon.

While it is not a great movie, his impersonation of Buster Keaton is priceless.

                  ACK!

I think it's awesome that Slowwhand has as his favorite actor a slightly effette, Frenchified, boarderline anti-american hipster.

I also like Chiwetel Ejiofor. I think he can play just about any role.

                            In no particular order:

                            Jean Reno
                            Kevin Spacey
                            Jean Reno
                            Ed Harris
                            Bruno Ganz
                            Gene Hackman

Also I like a lot of those already mentioned, like Freeman, Washington, Crowe and probably a lot I can't think of right now.
