Then why announce the incident?
And I don't for a second think this was an Iranian government sanctioned event. The IRCGN are just a bunch of thugs, they do what they want when they want. Piracy and murder on the high seas is something they do every day.
Which is why I think eventually the Revolutionary Guard will outlive its usefullness. The regular Iranian military hates their guts, and now they are initiating hostilities against a super power on what was probably their own volition."The DPRK is still in a state of war with the U.S. It's called a black out." - Che explaining why orbital nightime pictures of NK show few lights. Seriously.

So presumably they were NOT trying for the Cole tactic, eh? Like I said, I don't know the strength of the armor on your ships, or whether they're built to take a few hull breaches without sinking (I hope so). I was just commenting on the humor of five little boats threatening to utterly destroy three ships, the smallest of which exceeds their combined weight by a substantial margin. Maybe David could match Goliath here, but it's a big threat to make. That's all I'm saying.
EDIT: Yeah, I expect it would be different if they used stealthier tactics, Pat. As opposed to squawking threats like five rabbits threatening a family of elephants.

They are heavily compartmentalized with automatic fire suppression systems and pumps, so as the Cole proved they can take quite a bit of holing and still survive.
BTW My Ship the USS Navarro APA-215 had a top speed of 18.1 Knots and was 455 feet and weight 12,500 tons. We did a FRAM in July to Nov. 64 and then went on sea trials and at top speed we did a 180 to port. The ship roll somewhere between 10* and 15 degrees and some one said it took some where between 3/4 to 1 mile to complete the 180 turn. At speed around 5 knots we could turn a 180 in about a 1/4 of a mile. We also did a full reverse from 18.1 and it took around 3 miles to start going backwards. We had about a 15 foot 5 blade speed curve prop.

Well since you put is out, the hull should be 1/4 to 3/8 thick HTS steel, again unless the Navy has change.

This happened to my ship in the straits:
"Iranian craft approaching."
"Iranian craft state your intentions."
........
"Iranian craft state your intentions"
.........
"Prepare for General Quarters"
"Topside lookout reports vessel is a fishing vessel."
"Belay General Quarters."
ACK!Don't try to confuse the issue with half-truths and gorilla dust!

Video
No doubt about it, the Iranians are completely in the wrong.
Note the series of short blasts form the ship's wistle. Five or more short blansts is the international danger sign for vessels and you are required by international law to take all measures to avoid collision or close contact with other vessels that might cause collision.
The Iranians are douchebags every way around."The DPRK is still in a state of war with the U.S. It's called a black out." - Che explaining why orbital nightime pictures of NK show few lights. Seriously.

We really couldn't have lost politics wise seeing as Iran denied the incident and THEN we showed video
I still don't think this was an authorzed action."The DPRK is still in a state of war with the U.S. It's called a black out." - Che explaining why orbital nightime pictures of NK show few lights. Seriously.

I would imagine the USN shooting at little speed boats would cause far more trouble than they really want right now. I would also imagine incidents such as this aren't going to be isolated.
As for those who thing the US ships should have started shooting, I'm sure a repeat of something like Iran Air Flight 655 isn't really what the diplomats want at this time. Especially as shooting first would be interpreted as an Act of War.
If you think Operation Iraqi Freedom cost a lot of money, a war with Iran would most likely send the US economy into freefall and send the rest of the world down the same path as oil supply became seriously disrupted. There's no game in The Sims. How would a video taped and radio recorded incident of Iranian boats threatening a US Naval ship being destroyed be a repeat of Flight 655?I make no bones about my moral support for [terrorist] organizations. - chegitz guevara
