Silly German CDU politicians, before people forget what asshattery their party is capable of doing they remind us with some great ideas how to combat youth crime. Because some violent attacks (well exactly two cases) of young against older people made the headlines here in recent days they come up with totally new and unheard stuff like:

- we need more drastic penalties, because we all know how that gets rid of crime
- and - my favourite - we need the possibility to send young (teenage) criminals into bootcamps (which so far don't exist here), because in the unthinkable case that more penalties don't help more drill will surely solve the problem

BTW, the guys who call for that most often are currently in election campaigns.

-- I have seen some anecdotal reports that bootcamp type situations for young offenders can be moderately effective-- I'm sure there are some horror stories out there but hard labour combined wiith some training and a strict regimen does not strike me as all that bad a way to go for some minor offenders

-- I don't know what constitutes drastic penalties so I cannot really comment on that but I do know that I am generally in favor of stiffer penalties for repeat offenders-- It may not bring much general deterrence but if a guy is just convicted of 20 break and enters after serving a few years on a dozen break and enters, I'm comfortable if they want to send him away long enough that his artritic hip will prevent im from doing it in the future

In the US, I think bootcamps are mostly set up by private companies and the kids sent their are usually forced to go by there parents. I don't think the government uses bootcamps as correctional facilities. I could be completely wrong in this though but anytime I have heard of bootcamps, they are privately owned.
