I didn't find out until after my dad died and I was going through his papers. I knew I was 1/128 Cherokee, but I'm even more Lakota (okay, not much more).
Did you have 48" pizza for dinner?
Correct me if I'm wrong but that would mean you have 1 great-great-great-great-great-grandparent that was Cherokee.
How long has your family been here?

If you assume 30 years between each generation that only takes it back to 1827 or there abouts. It's not that implausible.
I prefaced with a "Correct me if I'm wrong..." for a reason. I wasn't entirely sure on the math to start with. I come up with something late 1700's.
Quite possible. Zkrib isn't Oerdin so I won't demand proof.

The real question is how many casinos do they have?

I can trace some ancestors back to the time of the Revolution. The Lakota and Cherokee breaches of the family have obviosly been here longer.
20 years is indeed usually done but by showing that it works even for the historically very large gap of 30 years it's clear that there is no remarkable issue with the 1/128 ancestry claim.

In a 'Huh? Can they do that?' type of moment:
Why not? The US supports secessionists elsewhere declaring independence against international law. Perhaps Russia, China and India will decide to recognise the new state.

Again, what do the Lakotas plan to do? Any significant piece of territory not agreeing to US Gov rule would pose a considerable challenge.
I don't think its all that many people, though. And, of course, US authorities would ignore it. I mean, really, it is still US land, we just allow them to have tribal government there. They still have to abide by federal law. So, people without drivers' licenses will still go to jail and those that refuse to pay taxes will have liens on their houses, etc.

Well, if one of his ancestors is Cherokee, then his family has been here for quite a while

Well of course that's why I wondered how far they are prepared to go. If they declare independence in name only but take no meaningful steps to assert it then I agree, the gov will do nothing. If they start blocking highways into/out of "sovereign" territory, charge tolls, etc, the gov can't just ignore it.

Not necessarily. They weren't wiped out LordShiva.
He could concievably be 2nd generation and have a parent that is Cherokee. That wasn't the issue.
It was the 1/128 that got my attention. You have to go back many generations to get that small a fraction.

Annex their lands. As any Civ player knows, no treaty = war
