VA Proposal would ban all non-English government materials
Why would government materials be in anything but English?
I'm sure people in the thread, including the starter, have wrung their hands; but it's still uncalled for.

My Father in law never learned English, somehow he managed to obtain govt services, despite the lack of govt materials in Yiddish, Hungarian, biblical Hebrew, and Aramaic.
He had relatives and others who knew English, who acted as interpretors. Thats what folks have done for a long time.
So? I also bet there are a whole Hell of a lot more native Spanish speakers in the country with poor English(who are citizens or legal residents) than folks in your Father-in-law's situation.
Such much more, in fact, that it makes sense to provide the documents in that language.
Today, you are the waves of the Pacific, pushing ever eastward. You are the sequoias rising from the Sierra Nevada, defiant and enduring.
The V.A.? Come on, man. I guess everyone from the Commander down through squad leaders will have to learn...how many languages?

It just shows that the rep isn't completely insane. However, there's still no reason to forbid local govts from offering resources in spanish.
Yep. Why should the state ban local governments from offering materials in different languages? After all, the US has no official language.

He had never seen an Asian or a Hispanic person in person.
I call 48" pizza on you, as you obviously don't know the demographics of Virginia. We are rural and or covered in miltary bases. Apply.

Im not suggesting whether the proposal is good public policy or not, Im just denying that it in any way amounts to a denial of public services.
And I might point out, that for folks whose parents DID overcome the difficulties of integration with so little help, theres more than a little resentment at the sense of entitlement over language and other issues on the part of hispanic immigrants. Its amusing to having it all chalked up to nativism - QOTM is apparently a nativist, despite having been born in Hungary.
