Asher, I used to have 28 year olds reporting to me ... i'm much happier now that I don't anymore I'm so much happier doing real work instead of having to manage people...
I don't have to do a whole lot of managerial things yet. The position is team lead, I'm mostly the tech epicentre of the team with little bits of management thrown in. All of the real boring stuff (salary reviews, etc) get punted up the ladder.
And it's the fact that these 28-35 year old people are all people with university degrees, and the fact that I'm barely 24, that is interesting to me.

Ahh, that's the sweet spot. In a few years you'll be a manager, and it will al be downhill from there...
Asher - you'll soon find (or have found already?) that there are basically 2 groups of people in business, e.g. those who have the motivation or skill (or both, more rarely) to advance quickly and the ones who don't; the former get advanced quickly, the latter stay around for often quite a lot of time in the lower groups, while younger people get promoted ahead of them (often without them minding, as if they had the motivation=desire to be promoted they would work towards it). You'd be surprised at how many people (even in 'motivated' fields like IT) are quite happy to recieve a paycheck for doing give or take the same exact thing for decades...

Me too. In fact , "mentoring" is a big part of my objectives for the year and was a big component of my third party assessments.
WE just finished our review process and I kicked a$$. While my raise will probably only 6-10% since I am at the top of my band, my boss is indicating my bonus could be 20-30% of salary-- (20% should be a slam dunk and I get to 30% if my boss's boss signs off on a bonus level of 150%)

Oh ya and even better I just got told I am assigned to mentor the summer student. She is tall and model gorgeous such that in separate conversations three different women in our office commented on how beautiful she was.
I'm old enough to be her dad but I still think I will enjoy spending time with a gorgeous super-bright young woman.

Well I don't want to become a manager-- too much crap IMHO-- but as a senior lawyer, the tasks do not get that repetitive. People only come to me with the unusual stuff they cannot fix themselves

I hate to sound sexist but our experience with female students has been less than great. We've had some attractive students but not good workers. Strange since the bosses are both women and one is quite attractive.
We currently have a student with us who happens to be gay. He is openly so (earring in the "wrong" ear being the most visible indication). I am curious to see the reaction from clients. Our industry is still quite homophobic.
As to cash issues... I wanted more money b/c I felt underpaid and although I'm glad for the $$ I got it is more than I actually need or would have settled for (I live extremely cheap). I didn't turn it down of course.
My only concern was that I didn't have to work harder for the money. I really don't like to work that hard and the workload as is was more than enough. Thankfully my new chores will not be too intensive.

she's only here for the summer so if we get a couple of decent research projects from her, that will be more than enough
Our group is mainly women-- The boss is a guy 20 years older than me and we have 3 female layers all about 10 years younger and less experienced than me-- 2 are great and the third is a bit of a head case--
Its a good group

Of course-- The first big raise is always interesting since it si SO much more money-- you wonder how you will spend it all-- Then . . . you figure out how to spend it

Flubber - We have Ms. Headcase' sister on staff. She actually causes me extra work in "cleaning up" after her mistakes.
