Yep, the Northwest passage would be a viable shipping route a decade or so early and there would be a lot less room for polar bears (they need land to sit on whilst waiting for the sea to freeze).
Actually that's probably the best reason to tolerate the continued existence of Canada.

In this scenario, it would finally become the 51st state (probably the 51st-55th or so, actually).
Not all that much of a change, in the grand scheme of things. The US colonists would be politically more conservative than the current residents, but that's about all.

We´d miss the trees.
Without those trees in Canada earth will probably get hot even faster than now
And the Mounties. What would have Disney done without those Mounties?Tamsin (Lost Girl): "I am the Harbinger of Death. I arrive on winds of blessed air. Air that you no longer deserve."

If the disappearance of Canada was unexplainable there would likely also be world wide economic devastation in the wake of panic in the face of the unknown. If the disappearance was somehow explainable in a non alarming way things would probably be a bit less interesting.
Like practically all countries Canada has few if any unique roles as a political entity so if it disappeared the effects would take time to be really noticeable and even when things evolved along very different lines as a result of it's absence it would be very difficult to trace the changes unambiguously to the absence of Canada.
Things would be worst in the US obviously as like any other country it's economy is not well adapted to the sudden disappearance of most of it's foreign trade. There would be all sorts of immediate shortages and the situation would probably resemble that of a country that gets various economic sanctions placed on it.
We also need to clarify, is it only the political entity of Canada that is being taken away from us or are we losing all of it's inhabitants as well?
If we get to keep the inhabitants likely they would immediately form at least one and possibly 2 new countries within the former boundaries of Canada. I wouldn't be surprised if they named it "Canada" set up a parliamentary democracy and chose as their currency the loonie and adopted UH.
If only all of the citizens of Canada disappeared and all of the draft dodgers and other illegal immigrants remained the same result would likely occur.
If the land was empty Canadas only neighbor would probably secure the borders and either eventually formally annex the whole vacant region or preside over the re-establishment of a new country of "Canada" in the old borders with resettlement nominally governed by the occupier as a sort of unilaterally sanctioned trust territory.
Honestly the world is in such a condition that even if the EU, the US, China or India were to disappear in this fashion the global civilization would continue to gimp along more or less along similar lines to how it would otherwise have developed. We can thank the forces of globalization for that.

Im assuming the people and all human made artifacts vanish, but the land and natural resources (other than those already mined out) remain.
Like Geronimo said, the biggest immediate tangible impact will be on the US economy. Michigan will be in tizzy, due to the integration of the US-Canadian auto industries. The effects on manufacturing alone would send the US into a deep recession.
There will be an immediate and significant rise in global oil and grain prices.
Lumber and paper prices in the US will spike, but with the current housing situation, this isnt the worst time for that.
Global prices of various minerals will spike.
I would assume the UK would assert a claim in some fashion. The queen in London IS the formal sovereign of Canada, right? Gordon Brown and George Bush will have an immediate summit in an attempt to reach a compromise. We've compromised over the northern border before, and it would be particularly urgent to keep Russia and others out, so I assume a deal would be reached in short order.
The first order of business would be to build sufficient infrastructure to get grain growing started again, and after that, energy production.
OTOH if the population disappeared, but human artifacts were left, the revival of industry would accompany the revival of ag and mining. Lots of US autoworkers called out of retirement to man the Canadian factories - great relief for big three pension and healthcare funds."A person cannot approach the divine by reaching beyond the human. Indeed, the combination of a very deep recession in the US, oil prices spiking even higher than now, and a spike in grain prices, PLUS the loss of Canadian demand for products from places other than the US, and I think we've got the formula for a global recession at the minimum.
Does that make the Canadians feel better?"A person cannot approach the divine by reaching beyond the human. To become human, is what this individual person, has been created for.” Martin Buber
