When do we get to round you up and let you build a nice commune on a deserted Pacific island?

No need to round me up. Send me the ticket.

Take Chevron-- they stress safety and their policies and procedures far exceed legal requirements. The resources they expend exceeds what they can expect to recover from having fewer incidents. So no-- the bottom line isn't everything.
Most Americans have a moral compass which, providing they have sufficient facts about the situation, would get the job done.

If for example most Americans saw the lives of third world sweatshop workers firsthand, they would proboably be less willing to buy their wares. If they knew and understood Walmart destroys small buisnesses, they would again be less willing.

I don't think most walmart consumers are fully aware of the true harm the place causes.

They may be a bit aware, but they are so displeased by that that they ignore it and don't seek more information which they know would make them unhappy.

See-- More cryptic commie-nonsense. Thats as meaningful as if I say " If I have to kill you, I will kill you"

IF you approached my family with intent to harm them-- then I would kill you in defence of them. But since we live thousands of miles apart and I see no reason why you would wish harm on my family I don't see much chance I will kill you. Ditto for the revolution.

Who is your "we" and "you"? Why do you get to do the regulating, boycotting and taxing and not me?

Seriously though for a second-- I fully accept government's role and if a democratic government places regulations or taxes in place I will see it as my duty to abide by them. Although I am sure all people have limits to what they would accept before they would "revolt"

I also support and endorse any individual's right to boycott any product or service they wish and their expression rights to make any truthful statements they want

                      Do we?

                      Really?

And whose moral set should we all be obligated to?

                      Yours?

There is not one "single" moral code in the world. And no one nation has a united "moral compass" either.

It is denying basic human behaviour to say so.

true for most people. When the same brand stuff is cheaper at the big box (whichever one it is) many many people will shop there. The smaller shops are less efficient and generally more expensive.

But I bet if you asked a sample of Walmart shopers about the effect of Walmart on smaller shops, a vast majority would identify the impact on them... and they might care in that they will miss the quaint shop from time to time but not enough to change their spending habits.

Why again should I pay an extra 20% for the exact same product in the small shop?

As long as you understand/accept that the moral obligations will differ greatly from person to person, I can agree with this statement.

The reality is that if you pick an action that 98% of people would say is absolutely wrong, you will not find any of the major publicly traded multinationals intentionally engaging in that action ( could be some rogue employees)..

Consider stuff that people differ on

                          Stem cell research
                          Swinger's club
                          Gay themed vacation
                          Abortion
                          pre-marital and extra-marital sex
                          Interracial adoption

There are corporations that do business that encounter all of these legal things. Where do they draw their moral guidance from?

I generally feel like I need a shower after I leave a Walmart, and I can quite literally count the number of times I've stepped foot in one on one hand.
