Yes I will grant you that part of the situation is problematic.

I don't like Saudi society much but I believe in giving credit where credit is due and the no women drivers idea is top notch public safety policy.

This is of course something that every man knows intuitively although few will publicly admit it. Most men live their lives in PC denial and suppress a shudder every time their wife grabs the car keys.

I found an article published last March (so after her first conviction but before the bastards gave her more lashes) which sheds a bit more light on the case. It seems the girl was blackmailed into the meeting but then she arrived she was abducted at knife point and taken to a remote farm where she was gang raped. When she told her family what had happened her brother beat the crap out of her.

RIYADH - A Saudi woman who was kidnapped at knifepoint, gang-raped and then beaten by her brother has been sentenced to 90 lashes -- for a meeting a man who was not a relative, a newspaper reported on Monday.

In an interview with the Saudi Gazette, the 19-year-old said she was blackmailed a year ago into meeting a man who threatened to tell her family they were having a relationship outside wedlock, which is illegal in the ultra-conservative desert kingdom.

2 girls were chased by 3 men who obviously wanted to rape them, then one of the girls got out a knife and stabbed one of their pursuers into the chest which allowed the 2 girls to escape. The man who was stabbed dies in hospital afterwards.
The result however wasn´t very lucky for the girl who used the knife, as she was found guilty of murder and now faces death by hanging.

Hadn´t she fought the attackers (and therefore both girls would have gotten raped) both of them however would have very probably faced stoning for adultery and not properly defending their honor.
