Should it be? In a perfect world, yes. We don't live in a perfect world, so measures are in place to reduce risk.

However, my original comment is more about the general population's perception of 'excessive force'. It's not usually excessive force, it's 'bringing a gun to a knife fight'. The Law almost always has to win on the spot or there becomes anarchy. The Law can be fought, just don't do it on the spot. You'll loose or just make things worse for yourself. Use the channels available after the fact.

When I see a situation like this, I ask myself "What's the worst that could happen?"

The worst that could happen is I get shot. To prevent this, I wear body armor (and yes, that would include a masked helmet and full gear if time allowed and I were on the SWAT team). The armor generally works against knives as well.

Still, a quick swing of a fast drawn knife could do alot of damage to my legs, arms or head. Same with getting punched. I don't want to get punched (or cut or struck in any manor). If I need to secure the situation against a subject (or multiple subjects) that is not following my orders and might have a hidden weapon, I am VERY inclinded to want to use my TASER. Generally it doesn't come to that and I get 'voluntary compliance' using 'verbal judo' (It's not called that anymore and I don't remember what it is call ATM).

That's the very reason why police shouldn't have the taser available.

Also, I think that police use it to save time, and I also find that appalling.

Donegeal, it would appear to me that the police officers misinterpreted the situation here and perceived the man to be more threatening than he actually was.

He wasn't trying to run away. He wasn't trying to attack anyone. He wasn't following orders because he didn't speak the language, which the cops would have known if they had either listened to the man or listened to the security guards that told them so.

If the TASER were a 100% safe weapon that caused no lasting damage, then I'd agree with you 100% Don. But the TASER isn't. As it is, The TASER can kill, but would the Police get killed if they took him down without using the TASER, considering they had body armour? 4 is enough...

It should have less risk than criminals, wackos, persons disorderly in public, etc.

Huh? I shouldn't have a tool available that will resolve a dangerous situation and almost garuntees that all persons involved suffer no major or lasting injuries?

Ok... next time I come accross a situation where I have a resistive subject that might have any number of weapons I'll just wing himin the leg with my pistol and then pound him into unconscienousness with my batton just so I don't use that damn taser!

But he was brandishing weapons. What was he doing with the chair? What was he doing with the table? Given he did not have the items when they tased him, but if he can pull a weaon out once, he can do it again. (BTW, I'm not sure why they would have tased him a second time. I'm inclined to think that there as aspects of what he was doing before he got tased a second time that we are not privy to)

Good questions. Why didn't they ask him? Oh, that's right, because they never attempted to communicate with him in his own language. They went straight to tasering him!

You start waving a weapon at the law and the question and answer period is over.

You mean the stapler? Because he wasn't tossing things around anymore by the time the cops showed up.

You sound like a monster. I don't know if you misunderstood my point or not. Police consistantly use the taser inappropriately, which means that they are too inclined to use it. You said that you are VERY inclined to use it so I commented on that.
