99 times out of 100 I get voluntary compliance by just talking with the guy.
And that's great, but these cops never tried that option because they didn't speak his language. So then they went directly to humanity's universal language - no, not mathematics.
I blame the airport for that more than I do the cops. They are the ones that had more time to deal with the subject than the cops did.

For those who aspire to live in a high cost, high tax, big government place, our nation and the world offers plenty of options. Vermont, Canada and Venezuela all offer you the opportunity to live in the socialist, big government paradise you long for. –Senator Rubio
If that's the case, how was the initial tazering of this guy acceptable?

Read my previous posts. He was aggressive with, and brandished weapons against airport security personel (all airport security personel should be treated as if they were cops). He continued to be uncooperative when the police arrived and was non-compliant. I understand that he didn't speak the language and was very frustrated at the time (and I would have handled the situation differently with the information we have at hand), but it is not an excuse.

Ok, ok. I'll concede that it's possible that I've rushed to judgment. I generally try to avoid that.
However, I struggle to imagine how this played out in such a way as "the cops did nothing wrong." It strains credulity...

I didn't claim that the cops did nothing wrong, only that the initial interaction is defensible.
Rest assured, if it is proven that the cops or Airport Security acted wongfully, we will hear a great deal about it. If not, we won't hear another word about this and it will be forgotten just like most other claims of wrong doing (we might see a blip of "All officers cleared of wrong doing in Airport Tazer Death").

Dude, I know I was making a joke about the stapler, put it is still a weapon. Hell, a roll of pennies can be a weapon and he had already shown aggressive behavior towards airport security officials.
Yes, I'm sure the officers felt they were under threat and acted appropriately, right?
Should it be? In a perfect world, yes. We don't live in a perfect world, so measures are in place to reduce risk.

I think we're on the same page.
I agree we need to make an officer's job as safe as possible but risk is inherent in the job. While I can understand a desire to resort to a taser right away it is essential that it not be a substitute for other "old fashioned" policing methods. Quite frankly with four officers in a contained location with an unarmed suspect a taser is hard to justify. The police as you know owe a duty to the public and that public includes the beligerent and disorderly. I'm getting very tired of seeing a de facto death penalty imposed upon people that are simply belligerent.

Only rarely do I actually fire the thing (and although most of you guys refuse to believe it, its the same for almost all cops).
I'd have you doing the proverbial two weeks of paperwork every time you did.
Originally posted by Donegeal Yes, "May". To think that we have all the information about this incident from one poor quality video and a news article is ridiculous.
Unfortunately dead men tell no tales and the cops have already been less than forthright about this incident. I simply don't trust them to be honest wrt any investigation.
Apparently the taser manufacturer issued a statement to the effect that the device was in no way responsible for causing the man's death. I guess it was just a coincidence that he was zapped just seconds before he was about to die anyway.

A guy was stapled to death on OZ. I don't think I've heard of a case in real life though.

Taser everybody. You never know if the person has had martial arts training and is a weapon.
