Ok, I tought it was pretty obvius and that the vid didn't need comment.

The MIC is a very overlooked and important force behind the US foreign policy and has a profund cultural impact that has transformed the US into something the founding fathers, who were men of the enlightenment, would not recognise.

Ike however would, with greatly discomfort.

The world, in the last three hundred years, has not changed except in that sense.

I can't see the video since I am at work, though I am positive I know exactly what it says. Did you have any particular reation to it that I could argue with you about?

In any case, if we are concerned about forces that have changed this country into something the founding fathers wouldn't recognize, the MIC is the least of your worries.

Ike was speaking during different times. A different society, culture, the Cold War, different enemy, etc, etc. To use him as the starting point for a modern discussion is silly. Unless you think Athenian democracy must be the starting point for modern political discourse...

If you genuenly consider Ike as far removed from modern life as athenian democracy* I can't help you**... I don't know about you but some people on this forum follow or at least claim to follow the teachings of a dead crapenter who lived 2000 years ago!

50 years is as short time frame, and trends in history go way beyond that...

              A society of fear
              Strong nationalistic feelings
pranoia (the fear of an insedius enemy)
              the limitng of public discours
increases in mitary budget beyond all boundaries
              .
              .
              .

*And it isn't that far removed...
**To be fair I can understand Americans may have a different view on history than Europeans. But the truth is that changes are mostly reinvented old concepts...

Congratulations. That's the most worthy input you've had yet.

Read my post I think it is overlooked. *hint*

As in: "I think it is important." The way to respond to this is to explain why you think it isn't important.

This speech resurfaces from time to time. When somebody brings it up, he's usually a young hippie who doesn't understand the context.

Ehhh, there is a lot that can be blaimed for the current situation (which is hardly what people rant about). I blame incompetant Congressional appropriations oversight for most of it.
Big point in the speech is that every voter who's not PART of the military-industrial-congressional complex should vote against it: unless high-ranking officials in the army, shareholders of large corporations producing military equipment, and corrupt congressmen, are not being watch, and opposed on the voting booth if necessary; they will increase military spending infinitely, not just enough to "keep America safe". Voting public should have the discipline and courage to vote AGAINST congressmen who have supported (or worse, demanded) more military pork on the budget, even if it means they will not OMG SUPPORT THE TROOPS.
