Yah. No feedback since I never eBay. (Well... just once... for a girl... I bought the DVD of "Strawberry on the Shortcake". A pretty good show actually, and Kyoko Fukada )

I'm one of those patient DLs. I used to make sure to get "aeson" at every website that looked like it might take off, regardless of whether I planned to use the service or not.

I just need to find myself a bidder like the one who won this system earlier today:
          Gaming Computer PC,Core 2 E6600, 8800GTS. 8800GTX

I'm not exactly what's going on there... it's a very confusing listing. It wasn't a "buy it now" close, so the upgrades aren't it. eBayers seem entirely blinded by CPUs. I couldn't bring myself to do the Q6600/8800GTS (same budget, half the framerates) thing to anyone though.

            Hmm. Interesting.

I wasn't looking for a new computer, but... obviously it's worth more than $405. It would be a good upgrade over my current system (1.7 gig processor, 512 RAM, GeForce FX5500 graphics card).

No operating system... let's see... XP is ~$100. Vista would be more, not that I need it.

I may have to have a little talk with the wife about the Christmas list...

edit: what's the deal with warrantees on the various components? Let's say the fancy graphics card fries six months down the road (unlikely, but bear with me).

The graphics card doesn't have a manufacturers warranty. It wouldn't transfer anyways. Newegg has it's 30 day return policy, but also doesn't transfer and will have expired by the time you get it anyways. If it went for cost+ I'd guarantee the parts against defects for a year myself, since quality computer components are almost always either DOA or they run for years just fine. I think warranties are mostly a scam. You end up paying for the parts again, just factored into the cost... That's why the Dell is basically 2x as much as the cost of the parts.

If it's going for real cheap, you have leeway to just replace anything that might go bad.

I really meant it that I wasn't advertising for it here, since I'll freely help you build your own. Most everyone on Poly is capable of putting it together themselves with a little advice, and you won't have to pay the extra shipping (and CA tax I have to pay from newegg). There are manufacturers warranties on some of the parts, but they won't transfer so I didn't list them.

The only guarantee I make is that the parts are all in working order when it arrives. Sans any shipping damages (which will be insured) of course.

Understood. I've brought it up with my wife. The primary objection is that we don't need it. I've conceded that, but I loves me a bargain...

If I can't convince her, I will take you up on the offer to help me build one in a couple of years.

My sister's husband mods/engraves computers on a semi-professional level. He's sponsored by Intel and a lot of other hardware manufacturers. Six months ago, he was invited to display one of his mods at a large computer fair in Bejing, all expenses paid by Intel.

Pinhead is back. Or rather Magnus "Wolverine" Persson is back with another Hellraiser case mod. This time he has remade his original Puzzlebox the way he originally intended. Who says all Hollywood sequels are rubbish?

Wolverine is back with his latest mod project - a 'Biomech' case inspired by the art work of H.R. Giger. Check out the full worklog and the superb finished result!

Intel came to us for some top modders for a big kick-off in China, and we were happy to help. What followed is a story of epic intrigue, $750 bar tabs and four of bit-tech’s finest…and the eternal question: “Have you seen Beckham?”

I think you vastly underestimate the infinite amount of my stupidity.

I thought about doing something like this, but how do I know if the power supply is enough for my new CPU? Is my motherboard compatible with my graphics card? How powerful does my cooling fan have to be?? And sound cards, iieeeeee, sound cards! It's all so confusing and scary.
