Also, that is not how "irony" is defined. Might want to look that up too.

If he'd been berating Stahl and calling her an imbecile on-camera, yes. Though, I guess calling your press secretary an imbecile on-camera while he (or she? Didn't notice, don't care.) is within earshot and you MEANT for them to hear it, then that would also make you a jerk.

But my thing is how he conducted himself once the interview was in progress. At the end (that he determined), he just up and left instead of saying "No comment" and letting (or making) Stahl change the subject like an adult would.

I just wonder how a man with such ingenuous reactions could get this far in his career. Interesting guy.

On the other hand, I wonder whether his press secretaty has already resigned. He has repeatedly been called imbecile before the camera. So any self-respecting man would have resigned in such a situation, I guess.

While well within his rights to declare this subject off limits, probably he should have demurred a second time and rolled with the punches.

Despite what some might think, Sarkozy's response, although polite, doesn't make him look good to American eyes. And it will do absolutely nothing with regard to Stahl's reputation.

Maybe France's situation is a little different than the US'. The First Lady is very much a public figure in the US and her relationship with the President is well within bounds.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891
