Got one for work. No choice, it was needed.

I was one of the last of my friends to get one. They are useful, though I don't really use mine much. It's there at least in part "in case."

I only got a cell phone after college when I started commuting back and forth to school from my home.

Living here in Dee Cee, I commute by metro. A lot of times I would meet QOTM at some metro station. Occasionally it would be like "i didnt you THERE, why werent you OVER THERE?" "I was in the logical spot, where were YOU?" etc, etc. Or Id end up at a different metro station then she thought I was going to be at, and it was a case of which station shed said last, having changed her mind 5 times. This has gotten much easier.

Its also very useful picking POTM up from school. And for lots of other things.

My life outside of my job is my life, not theirs. I did the 24/7 thingie for over a decade before cell phones were common. I don't ever want to do that again.
I'm glad I'm not the only one that feels that way.

24/7 contact should be for emergency service people only.

                        I guess that's their problem.

Yep, because it certainly not mine.

I'm at my brother's drinking, (heavily) and they called my house, my wife gave them my brother's number (i had a talk with her about that) There's a problem with an application. Hard enough to diagnose when you can't see anything and must rely on a discription relayed by someone you deemed wasn't good enough for first shift so he's exiled to third shift.
Despite being hammered and answering with a definative slur, they'll do whatever stupid thing you tell them to try because you're the boss and they won't have the guts to tell you that you're drunk and being an idiot.

                          Hence, no Blackberry for me.

I wish all managers were like that...but they're usually the ones who expect others to do the 24/7 thing, so they don't have to

Don't get me wrong. There are sometimes legitimate reasons to be contacted after hours, but since the cell phone and blackberrys have become more common place, it seems that people don't think first anymore. In the old days people would try to solve the problem themselves before trying to contact someone else. Now it seems that people don't even try to resolve it themselves and just call to be told what to do.

On our old company call list, my name was always listed last and it had an * next to it. People outside the department would always ask what it meant. I would always answer was that it meant call under penalty of death. My staff translated that to mean, they better have tried some solution prior to contacting me.

I just don't see that anymore.

i got a cell phone so i could call my parents when they needed to pick me up from somewhere, they're known for being extremely late.
also, guys aren't allowed to call my house.
i use my cell phone so much now, mostly for texting.
