Ok, so this little boy comes running home from elementary school. His mom asks him what hes so happy about.
"Mom, I got a part in the school play"
"Thats wonderful, dear, whats your part"
" I get to play the Jewish father"
"Now you run right back to that school and you tell them you want a SPEAKING part"
"A person cannot approach the divine by reaching beyond the human. To become human, is what this individual person, has been created for.” Martin Buber
You meant to say I do, because you want to indicate that I do know nothing. At which point I would have responded with, "That is correct - I know nothing. But at least I know that I know nothing." Your grammar was wrong, however, so you've ruined that clever response of mine.
Why you are going to pick it apart? I reserve the right to clarify.
Why? BECAUSE I ****ING TOLD YOU TO.
...
*shrug* Because I'm curious. Yeah, I probably think your definition of sexism will prove you wrong or make you a hypocrite.
It means you treat people differently according to their sex.
This isn't good enough. I'll take this to an absurd extreme first: Women have to get pap smears, men don't. Sexism!
Clarify your definition. Describe for me harmful sexism.

Of course I did. Ha!

What do you think it is? I have very little time to beat around the bush.

That has nothing to do with social relationships. I'm sorry, I knew that you didn't know anything. Entirely my fault. Sexism has to do with human relationships. Ok?
Clarify your definition. Describe for me harmful sexism.
Aaaaaa....., having a relationship with someone and treating them differently than someone of the same sex, obviously this excludes certain things like intercourse.

I don't have any specific thoughts here. I just know that these long and tangled debates we have here aren't going to get anywhere if we're not discussing things on common ground.

So to clarify - note that I am not making any value judgments whatsoever - would you contend that chivalrous behavior and the idea that a man shouldn't hit a woman also classify as sexism?

That's what I said.

So domestic abuse is cool, or at least not sexism, as long as I am violent in general?

So what makes this kind of sexism harmful?
It's part of the whole thing. You can't just isolate it. Think about how children are socialized. The notice that adults treat people according to sex. So the sexes must be different. Then they look on the wall and see that every president is a man. What does that mean? It means men are better.

I know Kid already answered this, but I'd agree with him that those views are sexist (in the later case it wouldn't be sexist if you think a man shouldn't hit a woman AND a woman shouldn't hit a man, but if you think it's ok for a woman to hit a man and the man shouldn't hit back, then that's sexism, IMO).
The reason its harmful is it is putting "women on a pedestal", which means an idea that women must be protected and attitudes like that lead to all sorts of bad things. In the past that sort of attitude was used to justify keeping women from politics (because politics was too dirty for "pure" women to enter) among other things.

Okay, a little further now:
What is your view on sexuality? If a man is straight as an arrow and is attempting to woo a female, is it sexist for him to treat that female better than he would treat his male friends?
Now, beyond that:
If a woman wants a man to treat her better than that man would treat his male friends, is she sexist as well?
Don't call me absurd. Don't roll your eyes at me. Don't insult me. I'm still not making value judgments; I just want you to answer the questions.

blah blah blah, I've heard this all before. Don't worry - I hit women, too.
As long as I am treating men and woman equally its not sexism right, like you said.
Of course if it is easier to divine I some how like domestic violence instaed of addressing the gaping holes in your definition please go ahead.
