Winston - the Euroviusion song contest is campness for conservatives. I don't do either.

I'm fairly certain I care even less about the thing than you do. Haven't watched it since the 80s.

But you were supposed to be answering any question about Germany. Why do you choose to avoid this one? Don't you think there's a trend there that might be of interest in a wider context than just the Eurovision?

No, he was clearly named after the team he was destined to steer to its second period of greatness since the glorious empire of Herbert Chapman in the 30's.

His dad, however, was a reluctant conscript on the Eastern Front.

And here I was, thinking you might've become less of a rotten poster as time went on.

Pardon me while I exit in haste this rapidly degenerating thread.

Oh come on, Winston. If Serbia and Croatia can block-vote for each other, I really don't think we need read any serious geo-political alignments into it.

You must not pose your question as a statement.

An excellent question, and one worthy of a thread.

There are those of us who maintain it consists in a growing computer industry, mass bathing in the Brahmaputra and getting beaten up in Mügeln (See above). Others like to see involved jewels and public defecation. Pick one.

Well Winston I suppose I should have anticipated not only I'd be as precise as the original question but also come up with as dumb an answer as I suppose the one posing the question to be.

What is the general feeling in the West about the East? I.e. are people in the west pissed off about having to donate large sums of money to the East - and the fact that those large sums of money don't seem to actually help, which would mean that further large sums of money will have to be paid for quite a number of years to come?

                              2. Unemployment still much higher, as is voting for the left / socialist party as well as neo-nazi parties, the latter at least in regional elections. Said to have benefitted greatly from the latest boom - the region, not the Nazi parties.

                              Interesting.

                              3. This is a funny one (PH ). When I left for Spain the issue of Iran was just quietening. Checked news now and again there, nothing on Iran. Now that I'm back the topic of Iran returns on the big stage. The real question is: why is France actually hardening? Analysts say it's for domestic consumption partly and for band-wagoning with the US mostly. Germany needs none of the 2 and IRan is no real issue.

The last UNSC resolution insisted on Iran freezing enrichment, and imposed very light sanctions. Iran has not frozen, and US-UK-France are proposing significant tightening to sanctions, which I think was implied in the last resolution. Ive read that Russia, China and GERMANY are opposing a significant tightening of sanctions. That is what I was referrring to.

                              4. There's still youth violence and the occasional big news, the latest about a group of 8 Indian workers being beaten up by a mob of 50 Germans and hunted through town during a village festivity. Later turned out to be more of a normal disco brawl with several wounded and the hunt went on for like 10 metres. Typical you-don't-know-what-to-believe story. Anyway, in the early 90s it was your average neighbour throwing molotov cocktails on immigrant homes so I think it has improved.

But I wonder why? Improved economic conditions in the East?

The east sounds like a nice place to live, quaint, not so hectic.
