I specifically remember one new report where a device used in the creation of nuclear weapons was found hidden in the backyard of a scientist. He confessed he was instructed to hide the device until the heat from the US diminished.

IIRC, it was centifuge used for enriching uranium. A tiny wee one for laboratory work. It would need to run for thousands of years to get enough material for a bomb.

Incidently, I'm a "liberal" (sort of), and I *do* buy Syria as a US enemy. Not an enemy that is going to strike at us here (just like Iraq wasn't going to either), but rather an enemy in the ME region. They are opposed to our policies wrt Israel, Lebanon and now Iraq.

The WMDs thing has been addressed. That the Bushies claimed they may have been taken to Syria and hidden doesn't surprise me, nor does it come anywhere near convincing me. That doesn't mean that Syria isn't an enemy, though.

No it hasn't. Just because Liberals say something is proven doesn't make it so. You'll still find plenty of opinions to the contrary just like you'll find plenty of scientists on both sides of the global warming debate. Liberals want us to believe that is a done issue as well. I respect your opinions Wezil, but you are a perfect example of what is wrong with the USA (even though you're not from the USA right?). You believe everything you're told from one point of view and nothing will change your mind. Your side is always right and the other side is always wrong. Well reality just doesn't work that way. Both sides have some truth to their arguments but most of it is BS. They are both working to advance their own personal interests. That's human nature. The real truth is always somewhere in the middle, so I would suggest that's where you look, not at some canidate that tells you what you want to hear.

Why is USA paying money to get AK-47:s? Didn't they capture enough stockpiles from the disbanded Iraqi army after the invasion? Wouldn't Americans want to sell M-16's anyway, why use Russian gear?

And why worry about a few 100 k of rifles, in a country where every family can (and do) legally own one? What difference will the lost weapons make?

The fact that the rifles are legal is the real problem, how can you differ a partisan from a pro-american Iraqi if any man can legally carry an assault rifle to the kasbah? There is no legal civilian way to use an assault rifle.

Except that the US government itself has put out reports stating that there were no viable weapons of mass destructions progams, far less weapons, in Iraq at the time of the invasion. The very administration that told you that was a the reason for war has now admitted there was no WMD threat from Iraq.

You are entitled to your own opinions. NOT you own facts. The FACTS are that there were no WMD's or functioning WMD programs. If you fail to accept this, you are failing to accept the facts, and therefore your opinions can be classified as uneducated.

Lots of the Iraqi army stocks were stolne when the US failed to secure stockpiles. Sicne Iraqis are so familiar with the weapons, its by far the simplest way to re-arm them, no need to retrain them in shooting the things. And its probalby much fatsre to buy existing stocks than to buy brand new weapons.

A hundred thousand unaccounted for automatic rifles will always be a problem.

You'll also find plenty of people on both sides of the "the earth is 6,000 years old" debate -- but one side is obviously wrong.

This isn't a matter of opinion; it's a matter of being able to produce evidence to support an argument. At this point, even the Bush administration has admitted that there seem to have been no WMD. Folks still maintaining that there were WMD are starting to sound a bit like Captain Queeg going on about the strawberries.

I've never seen you here before, Shrapnel, but based on your posts in this thread you seem like a pretty reasonable guy. I'm surprised you're still undecided about this.
